Resumen del Editor

An investment banker arranges the purchase of a champion racehorse and gets caught up in murder in this New York Times bestseller that’s “fraught with violence, conspiracy and, of course, horses” (The Boston Globe).

Tim Ekaterin raised millions of dollars to finance the purchase of Sandcastle, a champion racer, only to discover an apparent defect in the horse. Investigating further, Ekaterin learns that the business of investment banking is nothing compared to the cutthroat world of horseracing—a world where violence and murder only raise the stakes....

Enjoyable time spent in horse world

Although a little dated in a time period with phone boxes and floppy discs in computers, this was an enjoyable and satisfying listen. I learned a lot about stud farming, thoroughbred stallions etc through the eyes of Tim, a young merchant banker carrying the weight of a family name and legacy. There were some “didn’t see that coming” murders and nice twists. The characters straddled multiple facets of English life around 1980.

Brilliant!

An excellent story and mystery. Held my interest to the very end. In fact, I ran my MP3 player out of battery because I couldn't stop listening!! Typical Dick Francis brilliance!

High Interest

Another great story and characters with surprising twists and turns. Prepare to listen into late hours, hard to turn off like every great story. Wonderful to be able to listen while driving, cleaning house, watching sunrise and sunset. Awesome recording, very entertaining. Story is not for children.

My first Francis

It must have been 25 years ago when I read my first book by Dick Francis -- Banker. Since then I've read them all -- most more than once. And now I'm enjoying them again through Audible. Simon Prebble is an exceptional narrator; as is Simon Vance who narrates many of his books also.

If you enjoy classic mystery, you can't beat Dick Francis.

Not his best

I've read nearly two dozen of Dick Francis's books. This is not one of my favorites. The ending is sad and does not leave the reader feeling as though it reaches his normal degree of closure. The book spans over a considerable time period, and is not nearly as eventful or fast paced as his usual material.

Francis at His Best

Dick Francis finds yet another angle of the horse racing business to fascinate his readers with—this time the stud industry. To give this novel an even more unique feel, he tells the story through the eyes of a merchant banker and brings all the tribulations of high stakes investment into the novel. It’s a fascinating and exciting tale made more touching through some of Francis’ best character development. Like so many of his heroes, Banker’s protagonist falls in love with the wrong woman—not a bad woman, just someone who is not free to love him back. It adds a very touching subplot to a great mystery.

I wish I had read Dick Francis sooner!!!

I have come very late in life to read Dick Francis books. I was convinced I wouldn’t enjoy them as I have no interest in Horse racing. How wrong can you be. His books are great thrillers that encompass so much more than horse racing. Each book delves deeply into another world for example the wine trade,Investment banking or photography. So you always come away learning something. His heroes are likable usually finding themselves thrown in at the deep end. What I really admire is the strong female characters in his books. Always intelligent and independent and contribute to solving the crime or problem. Dick Francis obviously liked women and had great respect for them which is even more admirable when you think that some of his books were written in the 60’s and 70’s when women were not always treated this way by authors. The main thing is the books are gripping and entertaining and Simon Prebble reads them beautifully. So don’t be like me and wait years to start enjoying them!
