An action-packed new Progression Fantasy series from the bestselling author of Mark of the Fool.

Claim the ultimate reward or pay the ultimate price.

Betrayed and left with a life-crushing debt by a treacherous business partner, Wurhi is left with little choice—break into a palace haunted by sorcery and plunder its mysterious riches for all they're worth.

Wurhi has the lock picking and burglary down as an experienced Rogue, but it'll take more than that to survive. Wits, speed, and a tumultuous partnership with a penniless, hellfire-wielding, demon-slayer named Kyembe the Spirit Killer.

From burning desert city-states, to ogre-infested forests and haunted mountains, Wurhi and Kyembe will face a world of tyrants, monstrous cultists, power-mad merchant princes, and ambitious wizards to win an ever-growing pile of treasure.

Wealth beyond wildest dreams awaits.

…and woe to any enemy that stands in the way, as long as they can find a way to work together, that is...

Don't miss the next action-packed Progression Fantasy series from J.M. Clarke, bestselling author of Mark of the Fool and Rune Seeker. It's perfect for fans of Unbound, Wraithblade, Rage of Dragons, and The Witcher!

This was a very good listen. It has fun characters and good growth. Also had a lot of entertaining banter and fight scenes. Really look forward to a sequel.

Can’t wait for a sequel

I rates it 5 so someone sees this and doesn't waste their money. The main character (From Mark of the Fool) is awesome. But if you're going to do a book about him why not start off explaining his back story and how he ended up where he ended up? How did he get his ring? What did he see on his travels? You know what we get? Nothing! None of that. The narrator makes Worry sound like an old hag, and I can't pin how old she is. She IS funny. Cristabel sounds like a giant freakin DOOF like a mix of Patrick Star and Homer Simpson. The story is broken into 3 separate sections that can be summed up to this:

New place. There's treasure. Let's get treasure! We got treasure. We leave.

Good GOD this book is a drag. I love Mark of the Fool, LOVE LOVE LOVE that book, but JM didn't hit on this. He took one of the most interesting characters and made it boring with a terrible narrator to boot. Skip this. Maybe the next one will be better, but if JM is doing this to a side character who is AWESOME then I'm good on the next one. I can see why the Rune Seeker series is half a drag if he's writing like this. Not a big fan of Rune Seeker but I'm invested now so there's that. Please Skip this for the love of your credits or money.

This book is BAD BAD BAD

The short story format did a good job for character development. Wurhi and Kyembe were both fascinating and deep characters. I did struggle initially to not hear a Stone Eater and Herdazian speaking. That is one downfall of getting a bigger narrator. Overall he did a great job though. Fun story telling.

Fun read!

great pace so far and really cool to see this character more fleshed out from his side gig we saw him in before!

fast paced action and a story about a side character from Mark of the Fool

J.M. Clarke's story arc is about a rat shape-shifter thief, a dark elf mage (oddly, who just happens to be black, heh) and a paladin-type ripped female warrior. They team up under very unlikely circumstances to fight off a werewolf infestation. While their gathering was seemingly random, they soon find themselves very compatible, which lends itself to the listener to become invested in their adventures. There are many battle encounters, some rather grisly but also some lighthearted banter which lightens the otherwise dark nature of the novel.

Some of the antagonists sub-arcs weren't that interesting and come across as comic bookish villains. However, they weren't the main focus of the story so their characterization wasn't too distracting.

Michael Kramer's performance was very good and a joy to listen to.

Worth the credit

Main character is one of side characters from the INN from Mark of the Fool which is cool. Not a spoiler it was obvious within the first few chapters.

It isn't bad I may update my review as I listen to more but I was sufficiently bored that I'll have to come back to it later.

note Mark of Fool is one of my favorite books.
