Publisher's summary

The dark side of love is no fairy tale.... And while we may like to believe that crimes of the heart only victimize those who aren't careful, this shocking collection of real-life accounts will convince you otherwise.

America's #1 true-crime writer, Ann Rule, reveals how lovers become predators, how sex and lust can push ordinary people to desperate acts, and how investigators and forensics experts work to unravel the most entangled crimes of passion. Extracting behind-the-scenes details, Rule makes these volatile relationships utterly real, and masterfully re-creates the ill-fated chains of events in such cases as the ex-Marine and martial arts master who seduced vulnerable women and then destroyed their lives... the killer whose calling card was a single bloodred rose... the faithless wife who manipulated and murdered without conscience... the blind date that set the stage for a killer's brutality... and more.

In every case, the victim - young and innocent or older and experienced - unknowingly trusted a stranger with the sociopathic skill to hide their dark motives, until it was too late to escape a web of deadly lies, fatal promises, and homicidal possession.

Boring

I have found this to repetitive. Ann rule repeats herself to many times to the point where your like "okay, I get it!" This book is only good for road trips or something mundane like that.

Ann Rule Rules!

First off, know that the story does bounce around a bit. She starts out with one victim whose case turns cold, then discusses other victims who may — or may not — be related to the cold case. To a listener, it can very well sound confusing but she's offering her perspective at the time these crimes were taking place. She had years between each of the crimes but we only have moments. For this reason it can sound a bit confusing but I think if you are aware of what she's doing in advance, it'll be easier to follow. Just know that she hasn't moved to the next story but is talking about other possible victims from the same criminal. Just let her get to it and be patient.

Audible lets you adjust the speed at which the narrator reads. When there are a lot of names or information, I tend to slow it down but not by a lot. My husband thinks the narrator is monotone but I disagree. I think he's getting that because I slowed it down just a bit. I like the way she reads her books. She almost reminds me of Ann Rule herself!

Ann's humble philosophy comes through very well in this book, just as all her others. She gives the victims a voice and never glamorizes killers as bloggers these days frequently do for click bait. She handles the innocent with gentle understanding, even if they were once suspects in a crime! She writes the way journalists should,, who no longer do, without any prejudice or hatred. She makes no excuses for killers, like journalists do today.

I really am sad that we have lost her. She was a very gifted woman who taught us that life is precious. This book is well worth the read or the listen.

I really enjoy her writing style. It is easy to follow along unlike many that leave you always trying to figure out where things fit in.

Always good. Just not the best.

I love Ann Rule’s writing. She always tells a good story. This one was fine, but most of her other books are great. So if you’re working your way through all of her books, sure, listen to this one. Just know many others by Rule are better. In short - still entertaining but not at the top of my list.

Laurel Merlington is one of my favorite narrators. Subtle delimitation between characters and a pleasing, knowledgeable tone of voice.
