It's 1949. When war veteran Aloysius Archer is released from Carderock Prison, he is sent to Poca City on parole with a short list of dos and a much longer list of don'ts: do report regularly to his parole officer, don't go to bars, certainly don't drink alcohol, do get a job - and don't ever associate with loose women. The small town quickly proves more complicated and dangerous than Archer's years serving in the war or his time in jail.

In a corporate-dominated spacefaring future, planetary missions must be approved and supplied by the Company. Exploratory teams are accompanied by Company-supplied security androids, for their own safety. But in a society where contracts are awarded to the lowest bidder, safety isn’t a primary concern. On a distant planet, a team of scientists are conducting surface tests, shadowed by their Company-supplied ‘droid—a self-aware SecUnit that has hacked its own governor module, and refers to itself (though never out loud) as “Murderbot.”

Publisher's summary
The Republicans are coming to St. Paul for their convention. Throwing a big party is supposed to be fun, but crashing the party are a few hard cases the police would rather have stayed away. Chief among them is a crew of professional stick-up men who've spotted several lucrative opportunities, ranging from political moneymen with briefcases full of cash to that armored-car warehouse with the weakness in its security system.
All that is headache enough for Lucas Davenport - but what's about to hit him is even worse. A while back, a stray bullet put a pimp and petty thief named Randy Whitcomb in a wheelchair, and ever since, the man has been nursing his grudge into a full head of psychotic steam. He blames Davenport for the bullet, but it's no fun just shooting him. That wouldn't be painful enough. Not when Davenport has a pretty 14-year-old adopted daughter that Whitcomb can target instead.
And then there's the young man with the .50 caliber sniper rifle and the right-wing-crazy background, roaming through a city filled with the most powerful politicians on earth....

The usual excellent Sandford book but way too many subplots on top of subplots. Maybe it was a combination of a couple unfinished works combined into one book. Maybe not.

Letty Takes Center Stage!
I think that this iteration of the Davenport series really features Letty. She takes center stage and, in many ways, is revealed to be a teenage, female incarnation of Davenport. I have come to expect Richard Ferrone's voice and characterizations, and I think he does a fantastic job, especially when one considers that he began this journey over 20 years ago. I can also appreciate that Davenport is flawed instead of being a superhero who does no wrong. This is a great series and I am going to download the next book today.

Audible please fix!
The story and narration are great! However, someone bungled up the recording. The Second half of the book is first and the first half is second. Audible please fix this!

Not Sandford's Best
The story - main and sub plots were very good and the connections while a bit obvious were good. The behavior and thinking of 14 year old Leddy were preposterous. Even the most experienced and tough kid at this age wouldn't engage like she did - riding around on a bike with cell phone engaging criminals. The author reached - a little more conservative and cautious Leddy would have been more convincing. Framing Lucus as a push over to women did not cut it. BUT - it is a story and I still read and enjoy all Sanford books - this had a few obvious holes. Letting Lane and Lindy escape was interesting too - usually he mops up all the bad guys.

Connections
Wondered when and how he would bring Randy back . Makes the character's so interesting you go back and forth from book to book just for the development.

Wicked Prey
As usual Sandford and narrator Ferrone don't disappoint. Another 5 star book in the "Prey" series!
