Publisher's Summary

It's summer in Memphis. The sweat is sticking to Rudy Baylor's shirt and creditors are nipping at his heels. Once he had aspirations of breezing through law school and punching his ticket to the good life. Now he doesn't have a joy or a prayer...except for one: an insurance dispute that leaves a family devastated and opens the door for a lawsuit, if Rudy can find a way to file it. By the time Rudy gets to court, a heavyweight corporate defense team is there to meet him. And suddenly he's in over his head, plunged into a nightmare of lies and legal maneuverings. A case that started small is exploding into a thunderous million-dollar war of nerves, skill, and outright violence - a fight that could cost one young lawyer his life, or turn him into the biggest rainmaker in the land....

Not Totally Disappointed

I decided to give Grisham another try, and truthfully it was the tone of the narrator's voice on the sample that helped me to make the decision. I became fully bored after about 4 or 5 hours of listening -- too much fluff. I was tempted to give up listening, but plodded on. Yes, I like a story to have texture and believability but too many extraneous characters and too many subplots makes me frustrated when I have not been given good reasons to care about them. Nevertheless, the story wrapped up well. Honestly, I struggled to finish because the main story did not start to grab my attention until about 8 to 10 hours of listening. However, I did like the main character almost from the beginning (I tend to cheer for the underdog!) My next favorite character is Dex, an interesting and resourceful person. I am not sure how the title of the story fits except in a vague kind of way, the word rainmaker was only mentioned once (unless I missed it), it could be in reference to the old adage, "when it rains it pours" because the main character struggled for the first 4/5 hours of listening just to find a job and like another old adage says, "if it wasn't for bad luck, I wouldn't have any luck at all." I have heard that rainmaker refers to the lawyer who brings "big bucks" into a law firm. I don't want to give anything away so I will stop writing. But I still think the story could have been tightened up a good bit.

The narrator's voice was nice and soothing. He has good acting abilities. Muller's performance exceeded enjoyable. Another criticism is that 10 to 12 times during the 16 hour listen, sentences are repeated which was a distraction but didn't take away from the narration or story in any way.

This one kept me engaged to the last word.

Grisham is a master is developing characters and then using those characters to carry the story. The Rainmaker has the whole gamut of characters from the poor, to the Company executives, to the lawyers who work both ends.

My only real complaint concerns the poor editing of the recording. In every chapter, there are one or two audio segments that repeat. Through the book, there are probably 20 of these.

Poor audio

Great book and well narrated. Unfortunately, it seems that it was poorly taken from CD. Sentences or paragraphs are routinely repeated as if a switching CDs. At one point it even says," story continued on disk 8".

Production issues but still a fun book

Apparently this was produced for CD and audio tape. Now it’s been transferred over for Digital use. There are several instances of repeating dialogue where one section was stopped in another section was started. Not a big deal and I really enjoyed the book

David vs Goliath lawyer story

This story has been around awhile and has been made into a movie. But like all movies they don't have the feel and drama that a novel provides. This book is about a battle between the good vs evil, right vs wrong, small guy vs giant corporation. Narration was excellent

I would have given the overall 5 stars but the engineering on at least the download I received was very flawed. On a dozen times or more, sentences would repeat themselves. It was not totally frustrating and easy able to be ignored but its there. Maybe it was just my download.

Don't let that stop you for a good story. Definitely worth the credit

One of Grisham's Best

This is a great story that takes us from a law student's last year in school through a gripping trial. The twists and turns keep us guessing. You are not going to predict what is coming next easily. I cannot say enough about this work.

The characters are believable really easy to like (and dislike.) The writing keeps the listener interested all the way through. This one makes the miles go by fast.

At this point there needs to be a note on the technical side of creating this audio book. The process to convert this title to Audible format is very sloppy.

It is reasonably certain Audible took this audio book from commercially produced CD's available in book stores. This book treats the listener to the fade out and fade in between disk changes. At one point we hear an announcer tell us "This is disk 8."

The production glitches are not distracting enough to take all that much from the story, but they are distracting. Technical issues really affect some listeners so it needs to be mentioned here.

It also wouldn't hurt Audible to get some feedback on the their production standards.
