Publisher's summary

The inspiration for the new ABC series Big Sky. Winner of the Edgar Award for Best Novel, the New York Times best-selling author of Back of Beyond and Breaking Point and the creator of the Joe Pickett series is back.

"If CJ Box isn't already on your list, put him there." (USA Today)

When two sisters set out across a remote stretch of Montana road to visit their friend, little do they know it will be the last time anyone might ever hear from them again. The girls - and their car - simply vanish. Former police investigator Cody Hoyt has just lost his job and has fallen off the wagon after a long stretch of sobriety. Convinced by his son and his former rookie partner, Cassie Dewell, he begins the drive south to the girls' last known location.

As Cody makes his way to the lonely stretch of Montana highway where they went missing, Cassie discovers that Gracie and Danielle Sullivan aren't the first girls who have disappeared in this area. This majestic landscape is the hunting ground for a killer whose viciousness is outmatched only by his intelligence. And he might not be working alone.

Time is running out for Gracie and Danielle...Can Cassie overcome her doubts and lack of experience and use her innate skill? Can Cody Hoyt battle his own demons and find this killer before another victim vanishes on the highway?

Wow, I listened to this book in 3 days. I kept going for walks and cleaning the house so I found listen to it. Even listened while I did the rising machine and elliptical. It was mesmerizing. A true thriller.

The Lizard King lives

Great story. We love CJ Box. Sorry to see Cody die. We thought he was probably just wounded and they would find him in bad shape but alive.

Too dark- but riveting

The subject matter was way too dark and very difficult to listen to. That said, it was very riveting story and well read.

The Highway

This series consists of five books ranging in length from nine to eleven hours of listening. Although not required to enjoy the mysteries, it's strongly suggested that you read them in order - sequential events will make more sense.

Plot. Back of Beyond features an alcoholic cop. The lead character, Cody, struggles through a boozy haze to rescue some kidnapped kids. His story continues through the first 1/3 of The Highway. Following through the remaining stories, Badlands, Paradise Valley, and Bitterroots, his partner, Cassie is featured as the lead character. Having a take-no-prisoners attitude, Cassie works her way through grizzly murders including those of a crazed truck driver's abuse of 'lot lizards', the truck stop prostitutes, to satisfying conclusions.

Liked. No explicit sex, no language inappropriate to the character or scene, nothing gratuitous. Good mysteries, albeit a bit grizzly at times. Narration is fine - there are three. No issues.

Not so hot. There are some eye-rolling instances of coincidence that will have you mutter, 'That's a stretch.', especially in Bitterroots.

Good reads, a series to enjoy! Recommended for the murder mystery lover.

very unusual for this genre

I dont want to spoil the story, but I almost had to pull off the road and think about what just happened early into this story. Something I have never seen in any of this type of genre. I did like the fact that the woman was the star in this story, and maybe we will see more of her in the future. But she doesnt have the superstar quality as a person like Cody. Very entertaining, but not as good a Back of Beyond I thought. The story was predictable and not fully developed. People were getting killed off before we hardly knew who they were. If you havent read Back of Beyond, you probably wont appreciate this story at all.

Well done

I enjoyed this story, because it was suspenseful. I also appreciated the story did not use unnecessary vulgar language or overly discriptive sexual details. The narration was excellent. I'd recommend this story to others who like mystery/thriller stories

What a GREAT Ride!

If you could sum up The Highway in three words, what would they be?

Can't-stop-listening good, surprising, great audio performance.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

I was expecting the good and bad guys to predictably finish out the book. I was wrong! Lots of twists and turns.

Have you listened to any of Holter Graham’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I LOVE this guy. Wish he had more books that I could listen to. I think this is one of the best audio books that I have listened to thanks in large part to his reading performance.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Hang on -- it's going to be a bumpy ride!

Any additional comments?

The audio performance was great. The story line kept me on the edge of my seat -- so much so that I was looking for excuses to get to my study and listen to the book. I have had to rewind to catch up on previous Audible's that I have had lukewarm interest. Not in this case. I couldn't wait to hear what happened next. One of the best audio books that I have listened to.

WWCD, I have used this thought in real life.

You'll have to wait till the end to understand WWCD, thru the story of lost, evil and shallow people. Even the good guy isn't good, just human, like us readers.

Intensely captivating.

As a former Police Officer and a fan of Wyoming and surrounding States. this book is hard to put down. I've read the printed book and this audio was a perfect partner.
