Publisher's Summary

From number-one New York Times best-selling author Jodi Picoult comes a compelling and disturbing novel about a prep school teacher accused of rape by a group of young girls, the woman who stands by him, and the repercussions of the case in a small New England town where the past is only a heartbeat away.

Love can redeem a man...but secrets and lies can condemn him.

A handsome stranger comes to the sleepy New England town of Salem Falls in hopes of burying his past: Once a teacher at a girls' prep school, Jack St. Bride was destroyed when a student's crush sparked a powder keg of accusation. Now, washing dishes for Addie Peabody at the Do-or-Diner, he slips quietly into his new routine, and Addie finds this unassuming man fitting easily inside her heart. But amid the rustic calm of Salem Falls, a quartet of teenage girls harbor dark secrets - and they maliciously target Jack with a shattering allegation.

Now, at the center of a modern-day witch hunt, Jack is forced once again to proclaim his innocence: to a town searching for answers, to a justice system where truth becomes a slippery concept written in shades of gray, and to the woman who has come to love him.

Full of filler

This book is full of unnecessary details. The story could have been good but was dragged out so much I found it hard to pay attention. If this hadn't been an audible purchase I wouldn't have finished it. The best part is the last sentence of the book.

Excellent Book! Highly Recommend

Great story up to the last word. Narrator is perfect for this one. Well done.

Excellent book!

Once again, I found myself delighted by another of mrs Picoult's books.
Beautiful characters, credible story and last minute twist, it's all there....

unexpected turns throughout

there were few characters that were unlikable. Mostly, I was cheering for all of them which made for a very interesting listen. I highly recommend this book. it's a love story, a drama, and a bit of a thriller.

Disappointing..

Generally a true fan of Ms Picoult this book to me falls short. Didn't like the subject matter or most of the characters & finished only to see IF it could turn around into something enjoyable. For me that never happened - pretty much of a predictable snooze. Creepy ending sentence..

Great story, not great reader

Love the story. Jodi Picoult always delivers, but you can constantly hear the reader drink and swallow. Not a pleasant sound.

Not my cup of tea.

I didn't care for this book at all. Too predictable. Too many characters.

Terribly Disappointing Plot and Performance

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I typically love Jodi Picoult's work, and this is the first novel of hers that I have detested. It is full of cliches, superfluous characters, useless details etc. This reads like a rough draft from a novice.

Has Salem Falls turned you off from other books in this genre?

No, I will continue to read Picoult's work. I will ensure it has a different narrator.

How could the performance have been better?

Julia Gibson could be heard swallowing and rustling in the background. Her characterizations were contrived, cliche, and distracting at best.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

No. This book was a one dimensional 18 hour nightmare to listen to on my commutes.

Anxiety Inducing

I can't believe how quickly I finished this book! I was listening to it at every chance I got. My only complaint is the woman narrator is not great at doing men's voices and there are a lot of male characters in this story.

Boring and predictable

I have read and loved every one of Picoult's books but found this one to be so very disappointing. The characters were hard to sympathise with and the storyline and pace were slow and left me disinterested in the outcome- which I had guessed early on. I only continued to the end to see if I was right.
Perhaps Picoult sounds better in my own voice as the narration grated intensely. I want to mention a positive, but I can't find one.....

A bit of slog.

The storyline was quite good. The twist pretty obvious. But the main thing I didn't like about it, without spoilers, was the characterisations of the female characters.

Really enjoyable read

Really enjoyed sitting back and listening to this story unfold hour after hour..think it was just over 18 hours - excellent value. Jodi certainly knows how to craft a story.

Disappointed

Was very surprised at this book. Thought about not listening to it after the second chapter but persisted just in case then it came and went in waves. Very predictable. The performance was overall good only you could hear the reader stopping to swallow and taking breathing breaks which were distracting and normally does not happen in other audio books.
I love Jodie books but not this one! Not a fan at all !
