Publisher's Summary

Worldwide best-seller John Grisham goes rogue with his most suspenseful thriller yet....

Sometimes you have to fight dirty to get clean.

Sebastian Rudd takes the cases no one else wants to take: the drug-addled punk accused of murdering two little girls; a crime lord on death row; a homeowner accused of shooting at a SWAT team. l

Rudd believes that every person accused of a crime is entitled to a fair trial - even if he has to cheat to get one. He antagonises people from both sides of the law: his last office was firebombed, either by drug dealers or cops. He doesn't know or care which.

But things are about to get even more complicated for Sebastian. Arch Swanger is the prime suspect in the abduction and presumed murder of 21-year-old Jiliana Kemp, the daughter of the assistant chief of police. When Swanger asks Sebastian to represent him, he lets Sebastian in on a terrible secret . . . one that will threaten everything Sebastian holds dear.

Gritty, witty, and impossible to put down, Rogue Lawyer is the master of the legal thriller at his very best.

Rogue lawyer

Not the usual John Grisham novel, however it was a good read and can recommend.

Awesome read

Grisham always does it for me. Now with a clear narration, a lot more is added to both my speed and my enjoyment

More connected short stories than a single novel

Its not terrible, the main character and the stories are interesting but it isnt a single gripping novel like his best can be.

Grisham scores

Rogue Lawyer is another great courtroom drama by Grisham. His knowledge gained through experience of the American law system allows him to write with such an understanding that supports the storyline throughout.

The characters are very real so realistic that

Rogue with good intentions and a soft heart mostly

If you could sum up Rogue Lawyer in three words, what would they be?

Fighting Courtroom Divorce.

Would you recommend Rogue Lawyer to your friends? Why or why not?

Yes. It was good fun and the various plots joined up nicely. The overlay of his family life added well to the complications of the story.

What about Mark Deakins’s performance did you like?

For an American he did very well, but then he is performing Americans.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When the Rogue tried to help those who did not want it. And the end.

Rubbish collection of stories read in monotone!

If it wasn't this month's Book Club read I would have stopped after chapter 1. Had to stop regularly for coffee and a stretch to avoid falling asleep. Thought John Grisham was meant to be good!

Disjointed & unoriginal

About a guy who doesn't like injustices wrought by supposedly good guy organisations such as the police; so he uses the law to try to rectify injustices; & uses other means too. OK if your tipple is standard American movie type scripts/ stories. Maybe of interest to the opposite of a chick novel genre group of readers. Starts off with short stories. There's repetition in some of the stories of the same facts eg how the lawyer met his wife. We knew that from the 1 at story. About 2/2 way through the short stories develop a theme running through them all. It gets a bit more interesting towards the end - but I had a big sigh when my device read "7 hrs left" to go. A literary scholar this popular writer is not, in that there is no unique prosaic writing. Lack of any deep, meaningful metaphors that bring another nuance of meaning to the pages. Very blokey type story in my view.

Absolutely spellbinding.

I had forgotten what a fantastic writer John Grisham is. The reading made this story so enthralling that I could not stop listening. Started listening yesterday evening and only paused to sleep and eat. I've always read the books but now I can wait to listen to the next one.

Several stories connected loosely.

I thought the story telling was excellent and as usual the John Grisham novel held the attention. The final part was fairly predictable but I continued listening in case I was wrong. I am always left wondering how accurate the legal side of the story is correct.

Brilliant read.

Captivating crime book. Hope that this is the first of a series of books for the character of Sebastian Rudd as I was left wanting more. The narrator performs perfectly and this mixed with the perfect story keeps you hooked.

Bit boring

Somewhat like a couple of quite short (and then abbreviated) stories. Grisham must be too successful and sloughing readers off with some scraps.
Not impressed. returning it.

Another John Grisham winner.

I always enjoy reading this author, the stories are all great. He has not failed with this one either with so many angles and a cluster of different cases all coming together. Just great.

What a disaster, don't bother!!!

I never thought a popular author could write so much crud. The anti-hero is totally unbelievable throughout. The story has no highlights and is clearly aimed at the lowest common denominator. I only listened though to the end because I was on a long drive and was fascinated to see if it got better. It doesn't!!!!

Didn't want it to stop

Would you consider the audio edition of Rogue Lawyer to be better than the print version?

I loved listening to this when I travel. The book is made up into 3 sections so it was good as you didn't have to remember a long set up for the plot as each section was self contained.

Who was your favorite character and why?

There were no "good" characters in this book. All very human.

Have you listened to any of Mark Deakins’s other performances? How does this one compare?

He is an excellent narrator. There is sufficient differentiation between characters and he is easy to listen too. Good emotional pitch and timing.

It was ok, but no more than that. A collection of tales, nothing more sadly. Would have liked it all to have come together somehow.
