Publisher's Summary

Jeff Talley was a good husband, a fine father, and a frontline negotiator with LAPD's SWAT unit. But the high stress, unforgiving job took an irreparable toll on his psyche. After a despondent father murders his wife and son and takes his own life, Talley hits bottom. His marriage ends, he resigns from SWAT, and he struggles to escape from his former life by taking the chief-of-police job in a sleepy, affluent bedroom community far from the chaos and crime of Los Angeles.

But Talley's pursuit of peaceful small-town life is about to change when three young men, fleeing the robbery of a mini-mart, invade a tightly secured home and take the family hostage.

Plunged back into the high-pressure world that he has desperately been trying to put behind him, Talley finds his nightmare has barely begun, because this isn't just any house. It belongs to a brilliant white-collar criminal who launders money for L.A.'s renegade franchise of La Cosa Nostra. And the accountant's records of the incriminating money trail that lie within will put L.A.'s most lethal and volatile crime lord, Sonny Benza, behind bars.

As Talley desperately tries to save the innocents inside, the full weight of Benza's wrath descends on him, putting Talley and his own family at risk. Soon, all involved are held hostage by the exigencies of fate and the only one capable of diffusing the crisis is the least stable of them all.

    "It's not Suspect"

I have listened to a few Crais novels. Suspect was very good. The Two Minute Rule was good. The first three Elvis Cole novels were bad. Hostage sits somewhere behind The Two Minute Rule. It's alright but not much more. The overlay of too many improbable stressors and the paper thin bad guys doom the book from being much more than ok pulp. The last Lehane book I read, A Drink Before War, was probably better although still not good. The writing was better but the story wandered. Here the writing isn't as good but the story while not good doesn't wander.

"one of the best of Crais!"

my only regret is that this book didn't last longer. James Daniels is one of the best narrators I've encountered!

"Leave go. It's the little things"

Nobody says, "Leave go of me." In this book, everybody does. Why? It just sounds silly and distracts from the story.

"More than the conventional Hostage thriller"

This book is fast paced, a bit faster than you will expect. There is no dull moment and never does the author linger into describing the mountains. It is a thriller to the core. It is not a conventional hostage drama, the twist and turns surprise and keep you gripped. Any lover of thrillers will thoroughly enjoy it. It will not be really worth describing the character and plot in the review. The character building is also as fast as the rest of the book. But the book is not about the character, it is how the characters behave in crises. Speed and Thrills. Worth the credit!

"Didn't care enough to finish it!"
What did you like best about Hostage? What did you like least?

Spent hours trying to like this book but then I just turned it off. Not interested enough in the outcome to finish it. Don't waste your money.

    "Good suspense!"

This book was well worth the time and credit. I got it because I enjoyed a later book by this author. Plus James Daniels is a favorite narrator. All in all a good book.

"fast paced - exciting - what a ride!"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I LOVED this audiobook. The plot gets more and more complicated as more players enter in to the situation but it's easy to follow what's going on and nothing gets lost in the shuffle. I couldn't put this book down.

    "Not one of his best"

I like this author's Elvis Cole/Joe Pike books and loved Suspect but I couldn't really get into this one. If it had been maybe a little shorter I would have enjoyed it more. It seemed to drag in places and I would get tired of listening. Three young men hold up a convenience store and accidentally kill the proprietor so they go on the run. They hole up in a house which happens to be the home of the accountant who launders money for the mob and has discriminating evidence in his possession that affects two sets of mobsters.

There was good character development with lots of twists and turns and some surprises but I found my mind wandering often and didn't care enough to rewind to see what I had missed.

The narrator did a great job.

    "Kept me interested"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would. From the beginning, it kept me interested.

What did you like best about this story?

When I stopped listening, i found myself anxious to get back to the book.

What does James Daniels bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The change in vocal inflection, made the characters more familiar.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

    The suspense never ends.
