Blue Magic, the latest designer drug linked to a rash of overdoses, might explain the needle mark on the arm of a young woman found dead in her Kansas City apartment. In 2023 America - bankrupt, violently divided by the culture wars, and beholden to archrival China - the rules of the game are complicated. With the danger mounting, the dead bodies of young women piling up, Chinese agents circling, and the US Department of National Competitiveness moving in to quash his investigation, Azadian's only option is to go rogue, assemble a team of brilliant misfits like himself, and begin the fight of his life to find out who is killing these women and why, and if any others like them may still be alive.
The story is intriguing--I *think*--but I'm so annoyed by the over dramatized style of the narrator that I can't find a toe hold. Giving up half way into it.

Our book club picked this novel so I felt obligated to listen. I don't know if it was more the writing or the narration or just a combination of both, but it was a painful, disappointing experience. The consistent overuse of adverbs and emotional cliches drowned an otherwise interesting premise. The cheesy narration did not help. It became one of my rare returns. Too bad.

This is probably the worst narrator I have ever heard. The main character's voice is tolerable, but the voices used for all other characters are terrible. The female characters' voices sound like painful falsettos. A side character with an Indian accent is at times just short of offensive. And the voices for the villains are over the top. The story itself, while at times thought provoking, offering visions of a scary, not so distant political future, is just not well written.
