Publisher's Summary

Strapped by a chauffeur's wages, Michael Rogers' want of a better life seems out of reach. Especially elusive is a magnificent piece of property in Kingston Bishop - until a chance meeting with a beautiful heiress makes his dreams possible. Marrying her is the first step. Building the perfect home is the next. Unfortunately Michael ignored the local warnings about the deadly curse buried in the tract of land, and living out his dreams may exact a higher price than he ever imagined.

Praised as one of Agatha Christie's most unusual forays into Gothic psychological suspense, this novel of fate, chance, and the nature of evil was a personal favorite of the author's as well.

    "Unusual"

Very different from the usual style and plotting of an Agatha Christie novel. This is dark and, IMHO, rather unpleasant. And, unfortunately, it wasn't very suspenseful; it seemed that Dame Agatha, nearing the end of her long careers, was borrowing / recycling plot twists from previous stories. I credit her with trying something different, even if it didn't work for me. As always, Hugh Fraser's narration was excellent.

    "Absolutely amazing and heartbreaking"

This is another wonderful Agatha Christie novel! I really don't know what I was expecting when I bought this audio book, but I certainly didn't expect a story like this one. It really is a fantastic story. Although I found it to be more heart wrenching than I was prepared for, I definitely recommend this book.

    "Amazing!"

Even though I had to read this book for school, it ended up being such a great read! The twists and turns were mostly unexpected, and the other parts are quite sweet. It always a plus to hear a British man imitate different women's voices as well. Lol

    "Tour de Force"

Agatha Christie turns in a deep psychological mystery, her grandson's favorite of her works, which is why I read it. Darker than her others and a masterful delineation of the human heart. But I must talk about the masterful performance of Hugh Fraser. He plays the slightly dense sidekick of David Suchet's Poirot. He seamlessly transforms his voice from Englishman to American and male to female and young to old in such a convincing manner that the listener is never jarred out of the story. Most especially, his female depictions don't sound like a drag queen in a comedy show, but a believable human being, and switches back to the Englishman, etc. Such skill and talent. Far above anything I have heard on Audible.

    "Classic Christie with a twist!"

Terrific Christie novel -- thoroughly enjoyed it! I missed this one long ago, so it was an extra treat. Hugh Fraser is the perfect narrator as always. This one ends with a bit of a twist that I didn't see coming -- always a great surprise!!
