Publisher's summary

In a remote house in the middle of Dartmoor, six shadowy figures huddle around a table for a seance. Tension rises as the spirits spell out a chilling message: "Captain Trevelyan... dead... murder."

Is this black magic or simply a macabre joke? The only way to be certain is to locate Captain Trevelyan. Unfortunately, his home is six miles away and, with snowdrifts blocking the roads, someone will have to make the journey on foot....

Hugh Fraser is the best.

Any additional comments?

I love Christie's work, and for me, there is no other narrator than Hugh Fraser. He's completely brilliant at creating characters, and, most importantly for me, does a believable female voice (not just pitching his voice to sound like a Chipmunk).

Entertaining

Another fun British who-done-it by Agatha Christie. Even though it's not her best, it's still lots of fun. And, as always, Hugh Fraser is the perfect narrator !

WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE

If you could sum up The Sittaford Mystery in three words, what would they be?

A good story but I feel that without the snowstorm it wouldn't have been as enjoyable.

What other book might you compare The Sittaford Mystery to and why?

Can't think of another story, but whatever it is it must have snow in it.

What about Hugh Fraser’s performance did you like?

I've listened to many of Hugh Fraser's peformance and in The Sittaford Mystery he continues to be excellent.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

A snowy day in Sittaford town.

Any additional comments?

Terrific Tale, performed to a T

Loved meeting Emily and following her inquiry into mysterious death at Hazelmoor. Wonderful performance, as usual, by Hugh Fraser.

Only puzzle, aside from who did it and why, is how the snow that blocked all roads to Sittaford for days disappears so quickly that
Christie describes Burnaby contemplating a weed in his garden a day later. The whole plot depends on a heavy snowfall but that simply vanishes from the scene as gardens, rocks, moors, and country lanes are described as if they lacked not only ice cover but even snow. One wonders why the gifted author or her editors didn’t bother to maintain some sort of continuity of scene. The disappearance of the deep snow is unsettling as it returns as key to the crime.

great characters, great mystery

I find some of Agatha Christie's novels are more about the mystery and the sleuth (often her regulars, Miss Marple or Poirot), but this one is as much about the characters and the setting, as it is about the mystery. It's a funny look at the characters of the snowed in country village, who love to gossip and know everything about everyone -- except for the mother and daughter pair who've rented the manor estate, a very odd happening for the middle of a Dartmoor winter. And when a resident turns up murdered at the same time as forecast by the spirits during a "table turning" seance, everyone starts wondering what could have happened. In comes a police inspector, a newspaper reporter, and the fiancee of the nephew (and heir) of the murdered man, all trying to find out whodunnit.

Who done it ?

What did you love best about The Sittaford Mystery?

Kept your attention right to the end.

What other book might you compare The Sittaford Mystery to and why?

Keeps me wanting to read this type of mystery.

Have you listened to any of Hugh Fraser’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

As only Agatha Christi can.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Very good performance. Change of voice and defliction of each character was good.

Any additional comments?

Looking foward to listening to more.

great performance, good mystery

I really enjoyed Hugh Fraser's performance - the characters were well voiced (although his attempt at an accent for the Willetts was so terrible that it was distracting). I enjoyed Emily's amateur detective work a lot, and the ending to the mystery was quite surprising.
