Publisher's summary

New Jersey state police officer Doug Brock has been after infamous criminal Nicholas Bennett for years. When Bennett kills someone close to Doug, Doug's investigation - and his life - start spiraling out of control. He's placed on indefinite suspension from the police force and breaks things off with his fiancée, but he can't let the case go, and he continues an off-the-books investigation on his own.

When Doug's former partner on the force, Nate Alvarez, receives a call from Doug saying he's discovered something big, something terrifying, something they need to call in the FBI to handle, Nate is furious that Doug has still been working the case. But when the call ends abruptly, and shortly afterward Doug is found in a hotel room, shot and in critical condition, Nate's anger turns to fear.

When Doug finally awakens from his coma, however, he has no memory of the case or even the last several years of his life. But the pull of what he might have discovered is too strong, and he finds himself immersed in a desperate search for truth once again, regardless of the danger.

Okay story; poor narration

I would say this story is so-so and not as good as most of the many Rosenfelt books I have read. Part of the problem may have been the reader, and with a better narrator I might have enjoyed the story more. The voice of the main character was fine, but all of the other characters were silly and irritating. The voice of Nate, the main character's side-kick, sounded like a cartoon bear.

What a good story!

I was surprised at this story. It has drama, emotion, and humor. I was caught laughing out loud at some parts, and the story would immediately cut to something very serious. Definitely worth my time in listening to it, and a great David Rosenfeldt novel.

Hated the Narrator!

What did you like best about Blackout? What did you like least?

David Rosenfelt story

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Had another narrator!

How did the narrator detract from the book?

His voice for one of the characters sounds like a gorilla talking! He was attempting a big guy voice and it came out as a cartoon character...awful!

LOVE the book and the ADORE this author, but....

I just can’t get into the narration. Ended up buying it on my Kindle Unlimited and read it. No offense, he’s just not my favorite narrator

1.25 speed made it a 4star book

Liked the story and the main characters. Liked the David Rosenfelt wit. After 20 minutes I switched the speed to 1.25 on the audible app-made the narration sound normal to me.
Looking forward to the follow-up.

Not up to par

Like other reviewers have commented, this isn’t on a par with the author's Andy Carpenter series, of which I'm a big fan. While the overall story structure follows Rosenfelt's Andy Carpenter books (hero trying to unravel mystery with cutaways to the plotting of the bad guys) this falls far short. The underlying premise of a cop whose memory is missing trying to figure out a mystery he may have uncovered, but now can’t remember, has promise, but it never seemed to jell for me. I could probably be less critical of the book if the reader weren’t plain bad. While some of Rosenfelt's humor creeps into the prose, it’s obliterated by the clunky narrator. He seems to have 3 styles (gruff, heavy, flat) all equally boring.

While many writers don’t have any real choice who reads their material, I don’t believe that's the case for Mr. Rosenfelt whose best seller status should give him some input. I can also understand why the always terrific Grover Garder (who does the Carpenter series) might not be suitable since the tone is different for this book, and the writer or publisher might want to keep him exclusively for Andy Carpenter, there are literally hundreds of voice actors who could have brought my life and flair to narration than Mr. Steizer.

Missing Carpenter

I did not enjoy this one nearly as much as the Andy Carpenter books. This may have been my least favorite Rosenfelt book.

Having said that it is still above average to average. I saw several people say they would like to see more of these characters, but I'll pass. The story and characters are straight forward and there is not a lot of witty dialogue. I saw some reviews saying this one had witty dialogue but they must have been confused

The narrator is decent and not as bad as I see in other reviews. He is simply not the witty satirical voice of Grover Gardner, who is perfect for the Carpenter books. He would not have fit this book as the characters and story were completely different.

Overall a slight thumbs up. Just missing Andy.
