Publisher's Summary

After years of bullying and cajoling others as a high-flying public relations boss, Agatha Raisin’s early retirement to the picture-postcard village of Carsley in the Cotswolds is a dream come true. And how better to begin making herself a local leading light than by entering the village quiche-making competition? Unburdened by old-fashioned ideas of fair play, the ruthless Agatha decides to ensure she wins by buying her entry from a London delicatessen. Alas, Agatha’s perfect product is soon exposed - as not only store-bought but poisoned. The contest judge succumbs after eating it, and with him go Agatha’s reputation and her chances of rural bliss - unless she can expose the poisoner....

    "A Light, Fluffy, Brunch-Worthy Confection"

When you're tired of serious books and in the mood for something fast, fun, and frivolous, give Ms. Raisin a try! Agatha is an atypical heroine, brash, prickly, self-absorbed, and ofttimes ill-mannered, but she grew on me. And although the mystery is not particularly clever (the murderer turns out to be exactly who the police would have and should have suspected from the outset), the point of the story is in the humor and the all-too-human flaws of the main character, her friends and her neighbors in this charming, cozy village. I actually think I prefer Agatha Raisin to Louise Penny/Inspector Gamache/Three Pines. And as good as Ralph Cosham is as a narrator, Penelope Keith is very nearly as good, and perhaps twice as lively. She is a perfect match for the material. Many thanks to the reviewers I follow for suggesting this series! I have now purchased the third and fourth volumes in the series (skipping over the second, after reading the reviews and listening to the sample of that very different narrator). I plan to save them for times when I'm weary of long, dense, slow-moving classics, or just when I could use a bit of good cheer!

    "A fun little mystery!"

I quite loved Agatha Raisin and her cast of characters. It was a good mystery with a good number of twists and turns without really being contrived.

    "I Adore Agatha Raisin!"

I have read a lot of lighthearted, amateur sleuth books and the Agatha Raisin books have just shot up to the top of my list for this category.

Agatha is a deeply flawed and complex character. Agatha has had a very successful career in London, but decides to sell her company and retire to the country. Despite being surrounded by people all the time in London, Agatha has no friends. Although she does not realize it, it is this desire, for personal connections, that leads her out to the country.

This story entails a delightful journey of missteps, personal growth and murder. Agatha, while not always likable, is always interesting.

    "Light yet literate mystery"

MC Beaton has a wonderful character here, the grumpy yet lovable Agatha. It is light reading and as cozy as a mystery can get. Look forward to more. Keith's narration is spot-on.

"Like a cup of tea in audio form"
Where does Agatha Raisin and the Quiche of Death rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This ranks quite high up. It was so easy to listen to, relaxing yet captivating.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

It's not an edge of your seat type of book. I really enjoyed the story and was interested to find out who the murderer was but just listening to the story was what made it enjoyable.

What does Penelope Keith bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She was a great narrator. Really gave Agatha a voice.

    "Absurd but Entertaining"

In my opinion these Agatha Raisin books are comedies of error, not mysteries. Silly but amusing. Good to listen to while going to sleep. Love the narrator.
