Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

Publisher's Summary
Less than three months after retiring from a 30-year law enforcement career, Kim Colegrove's husband chose suicide. Since that day, Colegrove has been helping first responders across the country practice techniques to cope with the stress and trauma that their work brings. And this book continues that mission by offering first responders and their families hope by introducing meditation and mindfulness as viable and practical tools to help reduce stress, regulate emotion, and improve overall health and well-being.
Coping with the stress of first responder life
First responders have the incredibly difficult job of running toward danger while the rest of us run away. No training can prepare them for what they will see and endure. Colegrove understands this, and her personal experience opened her eyes to the desperate need for an effective form of stress relief and support for first responders.
No matter our profession, taking care of our mental health needs to be a priority. For first responders like cops and EMTs, ensuring that their heads are in a healthy place is crucial, because each day can bring them face-to-face with another trauma. With 40 years of experience, Kim Colegrove is here to share with listeners that there is a viable and practical resource for first responders found in meditation.
In 2017, Kim founded the PauseFirst Project, Mindfulness for First Responders. She teaches techniques that help reduce stress, regulate emotion, and improve overall health and well-being. Colegrove's work to bring awareness is a tribute to both her husband and the countless other first responders who struggle with the realities of their jobs.
Listeners will find evidence-based practices to help first responders and their families deal with stress, as well as interviews with first responders who share their stories of overcoming, surviving, and thriving.

Advocacy for Post Traumatic Growth
I am an active duty police sergeant, graduate level adjunct professor at a prominent Washington D.C. area university, a husband and father of four sons. I am also an author and trainer, seeking to lead resilience and wellness among first responders, leaders and their families. This book strikes a balance between delivering personal narrative, case studies, science and practical solutions for mitigating the corrosive consequences of unaddressed critical incident stress and trauma. In explaining mindfulness, Kim Colgrove offers an important component of your personal wellness regimen, and when combined with other deliberate resilience practices, can lead you away from the prison of negative trauma effects and towards the scientifically demonstrable phenomenon of post traumatic growth. This book provides a tool that assists us in the trauma healing process, towards a vibrant and joyful life. Further, the ideas communicated in this book are applicable to anyone seeking to reconcile anxiety and/or depression.

Have you noticed that no matter how much time you spend in talk therapy, you still feel anxious and triggered? That is because talk therapy can keep you stuck in a pattern of reliving your stories, rather than moving beyond them. But, most of all, it’s because trauma doesn’t just reside inside your mind. Much more importantly, it locks itself in other parts of your body. When left unresolved, that trauma continues to live there, impacting your life, your relationships, your sense of safety, and your ability to experience joy in very real ways.

Story
Have you noticed that no matter how much time you spend in talk therapy, you still feel anxious and triggered? That is because talk therapy can keep you stuck in a pattern of reliving your stories, rather than moving beyond them. But, most of all, it’s because trauma doesn’t just reside inside your mind. Much more importantly, it locks itself in other parts of your body. When left unresolved, that trauma continues to live there, impacting your life, your relationships, your sense of safety, and your ability to experience joy in very real ways.

In Try Softer, you'll learn how to: know and set emotional and relational boundaries; make sense of the difficult experiences you've had; identify your attachment style-and how that affects your relationships today; move through emotions rather than get stuck by them; and grow in self-compassion and talk back to your inner critic. Trying softer is sacred work. And while it won't be perfect or easy, it will be worth it. Because this is what we were made for: a living, breathing, moving, feeling, connected, beautifully incarnational life.

Story
While mental health is complex, our culture has made anxiety into something it’s not. For the majority of people who face anxiety, the truth is simpler than we think: Anxiety is an alarm. It’s a signal — nothing more and nothing less. Anxiety is simply our body’s way of telling us something is wrong. If we stop and listen, we can calm the alarm and move forward into healing and hope.
