51 BC. In the aftermath of the dreadful siege of Alesia, the tribes of Gaul lie broken and sparse, and yet the fires of rebellion still burn in the hearts of a few. As Caesar and his army continue to pacify the land wherever revolt can be found, a new conspiracy is rising.

Lucterius of the Cadurci, survivor of Alesia, seeks to raise a new great revolt, building an army in his homeland, while a small group of dangerous warriors embark upon a secret and dangerous mission to rebuild all that was lost in that great siege.

Meanwhile, Marcus Falerius Fronto tries to adjust to life as a wine merchant in Massilia, little suspecting that old friends and new will soon be fighting alongside him as the last great threat from Gaul is brought right to his door.

The final battle for Gaul is about to begin.

The character development, and relationships enrich the history of Caesar. Thoroughly entertaining. I’m looking forward to 9.

In the spirit of Patrick OBrian and Patrick Cornwell. Great series! Political intrigue, Bloody battles and solid character building throughout.

I hope there is more to come. Any student of Roman history knows the next events. How quickly it moves along is the only real unknown.

This could go right though the civil war in big steps or little bits at a time. No matter I have enjoyed them all. S. .J. A. Turney’s writing is for me very entertaining. With Carbo back I hope he is strongly in the mix. I’m sure we will see some cash made selling wine. How soon we get to the Rubicon is the question Fronto’s not getting any younger. I have also become a fan of Mark Williams. Sign me up for the next one.

Love this entire series.

Up to this book I was a fan but the increasing gratuitous violence has finally turned me off. Horror scenes dont advance the narrative at all and defeat the purpose for listening in the first place - pleasure.
Sorry to discover this is a growing element in these otherwise interesting tales.
