fantastic book!

the author presents a very viable solution for schools that are relying on a discipline matrix that only issues punishment. It suggest that kids will make good decisions if they have the skills to do so, and if they don't, then it is our job to identify those skills and support the students in helping to develop them

Truly Transformational

This is a great book that will create a positive shift in your mindset when dealing with students/children that struggle with behavior issues. The strategies really work and are a great asset to a school community or anyone that works with children.

Interesting insights

I believe Dr. Greene captures the essence of necessary changes school systems need to make in order to truly educate our students. Facilitating academic progress and and sufficiently preparing our youth for the future entails so much more than mere math, science, social studies and reading/LA. Social/emotional development, one's mental health and relational aptitude are intertwined within academic and cognitive development. They cannot be separated, but yet schools' predominant focus is solely on academic content. Overall, this focus basically excludes aspects of what science has proven to foster cognitive and overall development. Science has proven that the primary factors in having a happy and successful life are relational connectedness and aptitude! Relational and social/emotional health require foundational skills. These skills need to be taught, practiced and then re-taunt in a comprehensive, developmentally appropriate way. That's how humans learn- through patterned repetition. Great book! I wish all schools considered this philosophy. Perhaps then societal health would improve, along with the scores of typical assessment measures.

Brought scenarios alive

I have the book but listening to the reader made the characters concerns real. Very glad I listened to the audio along with reading the book. Looking forward to implementing this new way of thinking about kids thinking skills.

A must read for anyone working with kids.

A practical, hands on, easy to read book packed with valuable information. It invites one to look at the paradigm one is using to respond to kids’ challenging behavior and offers a more effective approach (a proactive and collaborative approach with proven positive results) to respond to kids’ (and their parents) struggles. Kids don’t have difficult behavior due to lack of motivation but rather because of lagging skills which can be identified and collaboratively addressed. Wish I had read this book 30 years ago when I started working in schools!

Great information!

This book has a lot of great information, even if you're not a teacher or educator. As a parent, I found this book helpful in better understanding how to use the CPS method. The narrator was good, and it was easy to listen to.

Lost at School

At times the information seemed repetitious but then I realized that is exactly what I do in the classroom to make sure ALL of my students have the opportunity to engage as they are ready. In addition, after finishing the text, I found several questions and even critiques answered. At the high school level there can be a lot of lagging skills and that may seem overwhelming, but remembering that they can be addressed one at a time and that everytime a student solves a problem, they are learning skills for the remaining lagging skills is motivating. Plus, using plan B as a whole class has the potential for tremendous impact for all students. I can see this technique as a way to address civil discourse issues and more, of course. Truly an important read for educators and parents.
