Story
Two retired Texas Rangers, Captains Woodrow Call and Augustus "Gus" McCrae, lead a cattle drive from the small town of Lonesome Dove to the unsettled Montana territories. On their grueling journey, they are joined by Joshua Deets, a Black scout and former Ranger, Jake Spoon, a fugitive, and Newt Dobbs, a 17-year-old boy who may have family ties to Call. Richly authentic, beautifully written, always dramatic, Lonesome Dove will make listeners laugh and weep, dream and remember.

Story
Ordered to hold an abandoned army post, John Dunbar found himself alone, beyond the edge of civilization. Thievery and survival soon forced him into the Indian camp, where he began a dangerous adventure that changed his life forever. Set in 1863, the novel follows Lieutenant John Dunbar on a magical journey from the ravages of the Civil War to the far reaches of the imperiled American frontier, a frontier he naively wants to see "before it is gone".

Part epic of Texas, part classic coming-of-age story, part unflinching examination of the bloody price of power, The Son is a gripping and utterly transporting novel that maps the legacy of violence in the American west with rare emotional acuity, even as it presents an intimate portrait of one family across two centuries. Eli McCullough is just twelve-years-old when a marauding band of Comanche storm his Texas homestead and brutally murder his mother and sister, taking him as a captive.

Cowboy stories and movies about the Wild West are full of amazing characters. Yet many of the lawmen we think of as heroes were anything but - some were violent scoundrels and outlaws themselves. Among all the lawmen of the frontier, one man stands out as a true hero: Bass Reeves. In his day, Bass Reeves was the most successful federal marshal in the United States. True to the mythical code of the West, he never drew his gun first. He rounded up hundreds of outlaws and was shot at countless times but was never hit. Bass Reeves was born into slavery.

Former Texas Rangers Benton McCaleb, Will Elliot, and Brazos Gifford ride with Charles Goodnight as he rounds up thousands of ornery, unbranded cattle for the long drive to Colorado. From the Trinity River brakes to Denver, they’ll battle endless miles of flooded rivers, parched desert, and whiskey-crazed Comanches. And come face-to-face with Judge Roy Bean and legendary gunslingers like Clay Allison. For McCaleb and his hard-riding crew, the drive is a fierce struggle against the perils of an untamed land. A fight to the finish where the brave reach glory - or die hard.

In this romantic and raw adventure set in the untamed wilderness of Wyoming of 1886, an anonymous college graduate ventures out west where he encounters gun fights, lynching, cattle rustlers, high-stake poker games, Indian attacks, and a brave, honest and imposing cowboy known simply as the Virginian. Presented as the archetypal, ideal hero of the "western" genre (which was novelized for the very first time in this same book), the Virginian, a foreman at Shiloh Ranch, carries a strong sense of justice.

A deeply divided nation. Vicious politics. A shamelessly partisan media. A president loathed by half the populace. Smuggling and gang warfare along the Mexican border. Armed citizens willing to stand their ground and take law into their own hands.... That was America in 1881. All those forces came to bear on the afternoon of October 26, when Doc Holliday and the Earp brothers faced off against the Clantons and the McLaurys in Tombstone, Arizona. It should have been a simple misdemeanor arrest.

Ordered to hold an abandoned army post, John Dunbar found himself alone, beyond the edge of civilization. Thievery and survival soon forced him into the Indian camp, where he began a dangerous adventure that changed his life forever. The Book Is Superb, The Narrator Is Bad
This is one of the great books of the twentieth century. It's everything you want in a novel. The narrator is hard to listen. He reads too fast, his accent is too pronounced, and he’s wheezy. Sounds like an old smoker trying to get his breath between every sentence.
Grover Gardner would be the PERFECT narrator for Lonesome Dove.

Superb!
I read this book back in the day but it was in the early 80s I suppose. My father was a western star and I remember reading this book and thinking he was the perfect Augustus McRae. Rereading this book since my father passed who is poignant and it was like listening to my father speak for 36 hours. He would’ve been the best Augustus McRae, Better than Robert Duvall I dare say. Anyway, I digress this book deserves every accolade and the performance is absolutely beyond brilliant.

The Great American Epic
Wow. I spent about a third of this book with tears streaming down my face, and I’m not a man that cries lightly. It’s so huge in scale and cast but somehow so intimate in its characterization that I fell to love all the characters and weep with them through their hardships. Despite the tragedies and rough lives these people live, though, there’s also a sort of wholesomeness and purity to their joys, pains, and dreams. Not quite like anything else I’ve read. It deserves a place alongside both the Greek Epics and the American classics as a mythos that encapsulates an era and a tapestry of iconic characters.

A brilliant narrator with a hundred voices
I am perplexed that some listeners have complained about Lee Horsley's performance. The man was brilliant, doing myriad voices both male and female in a way that kept them all distinct. It seems as if the level of Gus' voice was a specific issue and yet the characters in the book itself comment on how it is too big a voice for a little room. I found the characterization absolutely perfect and the story for the most part engrossing though could easily have lived without the clueless Sheriff July Johnson and his faithless wife. The other main characters, and even those who appeared merely for a chapter or two -- like Janey -- remain absolutely memorable. And the depiction of the physical world of the country between Texas and Montana was so vivid I feel as if I have now seen it. I am not a huge McMurtry fan but I did love this book.

Don’t Hesitate
It’s long but it sure is good. I got to the last 6 hours and tried to pace myself and not rush it. Just a beautifully written and spoken book. My father in law loved this book. I was skeptical because of the subject matter and length. I bought it one night on a whim and thinking about my father in law. He passed the next day unfortunately. So I did have him in my mind throughout this book and that helped. This book definitely stands on its own. It is perfect.
