Publisher's Summary

The Arcadian returns to the dark ice in a reprisal of one of his first and most deadly missions. But this time the stakes couldn’t be higher.

In 2008, a top-secret US submarine went missing on its test voyage off the coast of Antarctica. After years silent, its emergency beacon is suddenly activated, but strangely, the beacon is emanating from a point miles below the ice sheets of the frozen continent.

The race is on.

The Chinese government, alerted at the same time as the Americans, is after the submarine’s secrets. And the Americans need to retrieve their technology, quickly and quietly, from a place now marked as an international forbidden zone. With the reluctant assistance of petrobiologist Aimee Weir, Alex Hunter and his team of HAWCs return to the location of their first mission together. But only a few members of the team know the truth. A treacherous horror lies in wait for them deep beneath the Antarctic ice.

Fun but drags

Fun read but it drags at several points. I like the author and narrator. I will read other books by the same author.

Similar but good

This latest Alex Hunter book is very similar to the rest of the series. That's both good and not so good. You know what is going to happen cause you've heard it before but it is still an entertaining listen.

Phantoms

If you’ve listened to books by Greig Beck before, how does this one compare?

I have listened to all of Beck's books and liked them. This one is entirely too long. If he cut it by 1/3 and got to the point I would not have fast-forwarded through much of it. The Hawks behave uncharacteristically stupidly--they did not believe anything they had heard and proceeded to barge ahead. That is, "Let's yell at each other even though something wickedly large and dangerous is listening!!" I was really disappointed with Casey, a soldier that has been very cool to this point. The Cate (Kate? I'm listening, not reading) character was really stupid when she encountered the "new world" and Alex was too patient with her. That part was a fail. But, I forged ahead because it's Greig Beck.

What does Sean Mangan bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I like this narrator a lot and his pronunciation of some words is more amusing than annoying.

Was Kraken Rising worth the listening time?

If you don't mind a lot of filler.

Any additional comments?

This book reminds me a bit of Dean Koontz's "Phantoms", but under the ice, as well as the giant snail in Sterling Lanier's "Unforsaken Hiero" (a fave).

Kraken Rising? More like Kraken Snoozing.

Kraken Rising by Greig Beck

Riddle me this Beck-Man:
Q: What good is a super solider (Captain America) if you don’t let him kick some serious bad guy butt?

Q: What good is the scariest most powerful monster stalking the dark places of the planet - some thing that feels like & rivals the great Cthulhu in pure alien evilness if you hardly ever see it?

Q: What is the sense of having all THAT awesomeness in a story unless you actually show the monster battling the super solider to stop it from threatening the human world?

Unfortunately, in this book these two incredibly awesome elements are both superseded by the possible start of WWIII - between the USA and China.

A dramatic political thriller?

Sure, WW3 is scary,
But I got this book cause it had the first two elements in it.
I thought they were gonna’ go for the battle royal against each other.
I paid a ticket for Captain America VS Cthulhu - Round 2!
DING!

Instead I get 14 hours of tense political and military drama. Hours of sneaking around the underground world looking for Chinese troops. Watching political higher-ups play footsie with dangerous political scenarios.

Heck if I wanted to see that I could turn on the evening news.

Yes, and I HAVE already seen Ice Station Zebra, thank you very much.

Very sad and disappointed in this Greig Beck novel. He was my new favorite…
Now I’m heart broken. (Sniffing)

A good one...the Kraken has been done to death now

Any additional comments?

Greig, not sure why you felt you had to do this one..I felt like I was Beneath the Ice AGAIN and didn't need to be. This was good and I enjoyed the progression, but let the Kraken die. Let's just use our imagination and say those babies won't will starve and freeze and do not need to be revisited again. Sean, good job. I like your narration skills. Listener, this is good Greig. It's got some new stuff in it. It's got some old stuff in it. I'd say get it, try and if you can't get it, return it. He's worth the effort!

Excellently written sequels = excellent stories!!

This was a great follow up to Arcadia series. Finally Alex gets to come home to Amy and their son Hunter who is clearly going to bring additional mysteries. I say stay tune and buy the Audio version if you can.

The best book yet!

This book takes the characters back to where it all began: beneath the dark ice. It's a fantastic adventure with high international stakes and unrivaled peril for the heroes of the series. I'm putting this down as my favorite book in the series so far. High praise given I'm a big fan of the series overall.

How is this not a movie!?

Deep Rising meets the Lost World meets Aliens.
How is this seriously not a movie? It's fills off action, war games, and monsters. Loved it.

The impossible becomes possible

The narrator was good as always. The storyline could be believable one day, we still don't know what is down there!!!

Reminiscent of Matthew Riley books which I have always enjoyed. Would listen to this again.

Bloody hell

I hate bloody Beck. Every time I get a book like this I'm kept on the edge of my seat like some non-stop action movie and can't put the thing down. Kills my productivity. 😄
