Story
On a desolate beach in far northern Scotland, the winter storms have been washing up all manner of things since time began. But buried in the centre of one smaller iceberg is a shard of ancient Viking pottery telling a partial tale of a hidden mysterious island beyond the ice and mist, that was home to a great treasure and even greater horrors. Thawing in the same block of ice was a rotting flap of skin that refused to be identified but had similar skin patterns to a creature not seen for 100 million years.

Story
A journey into the deepest, darkest jungles of the Venezuelan Amazon...and a primeval place and time that mankind was never meant to exist in. Ben Cartwright, former soldier, home to mourn the loss of his father, stumbles upon cryptic letters from the past between author Arthur Conan Doyle and his great-great-grandfather who vanished while exploring the Amazon jungle in 1908. Amazingly, these letters lead Ben to believe that his ancestor’s expedition was the basis for Doyle’s fantastical tale of a lost world inhabited by long-extinct creatures.

Story
100,000 years ago the object hit the lake at the deepest point, quickly sinking into its mile-deep Stygian darkness. The sheets of ice closed, time moved on and the land forgot. But over the centuries, legends grew of people vanishing, of strange, deformed animals and of an unexplained luminescence down in the lake depths. When Marcus Stenson won the lucrative contract to create a sturgeon fish farm on the site of disused paper mill on the shore of Lake Baikal, he thought he had won the lottery and refused to listen to the chilling folktales....

Publisher's summary
Something has travelled for a billion years to find us - and now it has.
In space, Commander Mitch Granger and his crew are nearing the end of their scientific mission - along with their covert satellite photography for the military. As they prepare for reentry, an unknown object emerges from the void: the name given to deep, dark space. The object proves impossible to evade. The crew have one option left - to bring the fragment aboard.
Immediately, all contact with the shuttle is lost. NASA watches helplessly as their craft breaks orbit and heads back to Earth, where it crashes high up in the Revelation Mountains of Alaska. The space agency puts together an emergency recovery team, but the Russians also want the US military photographic data on board.
The race is on to be the first to the crash site, nearly 10,000 feet up in one of the most inhospitable places on Earth. But there is another problem. Satellite images show that something else came down in the shuttle, something moving about when no one should be alive. And that seems to be growing at an alarming rate.
NASA needs help and protection. Send in the HAWCs. But even HAWC captain Alex Hunter, the last supersoldier of the Arcadian program, has never come up against a threat so old and from so far....

Don't Understand all the positive reviews
The narrator, Sean Mangan, was really off his game with this one. He usually does a good job but in this book, he consistently mispronounced words, sounded out of breath making it sound like he was ending a sentence when he wasn't and at times seemed as if he was gasping for breath. The book itself was really not that great. The plot seemed to be taken from several other books/movies and just mashed together. I would say that it's a rip off of Aliens, Tremors, The Thing and other people's work. Very disappointing.

After How Many Books...
They are magazines, not clips. This and many other factual errors relegate this book and all the rest in the series to very light entertainment.
If you want something more real, Jonathan Mayberry’s Joe Ledger series delivers.

Horrible narrator!
Storyline was so so, but the narrator was terrible. At some points it sounded like he may have been drunk because it seemed like he was slurring his words. His pronunciation of certain words was annoying also. If you can put up with the narration the book is an OK listen.

Not his best
The idea behind this story was up to par with Mr. Beck's excellent style but, unlike him, the story dragged with continuous descriptions of the creatures encountered to the point of boredom ... something I thought I'd never say about one of his books!!

outstanding
I give this series 4 stars instead of five so it like the series can grow.
1) the stories in this series (for me are outstanding and fire my imagination of what if and what is)
2) the characters I enjoyed getting to know for a long time. but towards the last couple stories the insight into their characters has become somewhat lacking. as if the author does not trust us to accept where they are going or has not mapped out his plans. and as he has brought in new and older characters we should be brought up to speed. not left with cookie crumbs. the timeline should remain smooth. this area of book 7 I have the most problems with. with one exception. I think insight into the hammer appears to have become clear. unless this is all misdirection.
3- the future of this series looks both promising and exciting. can not wait.
4- one criticism. the blow by blow of each battle is a bit much almost like a word count. it is boring and time consuming. and takes time from the story. and the story is what we want.

Mispronounced words
The narrator is annoying at times, mispronouncing some words so much I almost didn’t recognize the word. I figured it out based on the context of the script. Cotton mouth and sometimes feels like he is struggling for air. I apologize but he is difficult to listen to st times. I love the author

The HAWKS are becoming more and more unlikable.
They are out right cruel to the civilians except of course the sycophantic reporter. Especially Casey. Usually she is gruff but still comes off as a decent person, just boisterous. Now she is just mean. And they are very hypocritical. They are worried about one of the scientists emotions getting out of control and causing problems then Alex loses control of his anger. While ordering one of the guys to be quiet they have a conversation about lakes. One of their guys get taken and they compromise the mission to find him but the civilians get scattered and Alex just says their own their own. Then he acts like the women being taken, possibly for a fate worse then death, as an inconvenience to him and his people. The Russian bad guys were more likeble.
The story is not as good either. It doesn't flow very well. But it's the HAWKS that ruined it for me. Also he uses the word warrior way to much.

Soooh Good!
Kept me awake for hours! Loved the dog and boy interaction and would have liked to hear more. Maybe the next one! Not a bedtime story to put you to sleep hahaha. Loved it!

what was that
tried to listen to it again as I hated out the first time. I usually enjoy these books. I felt the story line was missing and the book became a vehicle for the author to show his research about strange phenomena. Disappointed cos I so wanted to like it.

A excellent story with lots of gripping action and plots that left me looking forward to the next Alex Hunter book with eager anticipation. A great story Greig and very well read by Sean Mangan. Makes me wonder at what may be! Thanks!

worth waiting for
except for an average narration by the usually animated and well voiced Sean Mangan this was an enjoyable listen. Greig Beck as always out together one hell of a story and im excited for the next installment of the Alex Hunter series....that android is going to cause some trouble!
