Publisher's Summary

Unaware of the wider Heresy and following the Warmaster's increasingly cryptic orders, Roboute Guilliman returns to Ultramar to muster his Legion for war against the orks massing in the Veridian system.

Without warning, their supposed allies in the Word Bearers Legion launch a devastating invasion of Calth, scattering the Ultramarines fleet and slaughtering all who stand in their way. This confirms the worst scenario Guilliman can imagine - Lorgar means to settle their bitter rivalry once and for all. As the traitors summon foul daemonic hosts and all the forces of Chaos, the Ultramarines are drawn into a grim and deadly struggle in which neither side can prevail.

Must read/listen

One of the top 5 HH stories to read. You could argue this is another, great "Beginning" of the HH novels as it's the starting point of the Ultramarines induction into the war. Brilliant pacing, great climax, and awesome ending.

The story itself seemed to drag out

The story itself seemed to drag out what could have been maybe 3 chapters. I still liked it but this is the first book in the series I feel was lacking.

Awesome with added treachery to boot.

This a great story this is actually the first book I really enjoyed because the way it really affected me personally I like the Ultramar chapters and was the book was written with very real value of human reactions. What a way to sucker punch a brother.

Bobby gets mad.

First decent look into the mentalities of Roboute Guilliman and the Ultramarines as they are in The Heresy, which isnt far off from their codex loving hindrance we meet in 40k,prior to Dark Imperium that is. The first half of the novel develops like a military readout of sorts as chapters and parts are divided by a time countdown, this maintains after the first half but the amount of flip flopping around reduces as we finally get served up who are characters actually doing something. This makes the boom a little two sided as the book changes immensely after the "breakdown" in its narrative pace. I really enjoyed it but this style of writing really creates an odd pace ive heard many say they couldn't deal with, just know if it feels like your being tossed around too much thats normal.

Fine enough

Not my favorite but still a pretty good book, overall I liked the characters but it jumped around so much I lost track of what was going on some times.

A Great Introduction of the Ultramarines Arc

Great book, but would suggest reading/listening to First Heretic for Word Bearers PoV first. It makes it much more bareable to know the how and why.

One mark against this book is that it doesn't make the Word Bearers out as anything more than just cartoon villains. First Heretic at least gives you some bearings and understanding of them. I did love the arrogance shown by the Ultramarines. Made them a bit more believable as characters as a whole.

It has a very grimdark ending which fans of the universe will enjoy.

40k first

Hard to justify a four star review for a 40k book but the story and narration were excellent. Despite the flaws in 40k material this book will get listened to again.

Very different

A different take to all the other books before but if you can stick it through the first 1/3 of the book it really picks up pace and is well worth it

Goose pimples after first 2 chapters

Understand building story which early chapters did, but 20% to much detail in early chap, but a really good read in the series, glad i stuck with it , any other author i may have given up.
So to others, stick with it, definitely worth it.

So I’ve done a lot of miles over the past week and having this to listen to in the car has been awesome. It’s a truly epic rendition of a fantastic story and I have been left thoroughly pleased with it all. Great stuff.

All battle no character

Disappointing. After enjoying Horus Rising tremendously this was a big let down. 11 and a half hours of battle scenes with no character development. Most unforgiving of all was that there was no resolution either. It abruptly ends mid conflict and you are left none the wiser as to what happened.

Incredible.

Truly incredible. A must have. The narrator was very good and certainly helped bring the intense atmosphere to life. A great story to listen to as an audio book from start to finish. Highly recommend.
