Publisher's summary

USA Today and New York Times best-selling author Maya Banks continues her suspenseful and sizzling Slow Burn series with the fifth book featuring the men and women of Devereaux Security Services.

Raised in a strict religious cult since she was a young girl, Jenna has no connection to the outside world beyond vague flashes of memory that seem to be from another life. Memories she clings to when the cult leaders discover her extraordinary ability to heal - and punish her. Years held captive and forced to do the cult's bidding have turned Jenna into a meek, timid woman...or so they think. In truth she is merely biding her time, waiting for the perfect moment to escape.

When a terrified young woman tries to steal the SUV of Devereaux Security's toughest recruit, Isaac's anger quickly turns into a strange sort of protectiveness for the beautiful, bruised stranger. But when they are caught in a firestorm of bullets and Isaac is hit, he's sure the end is near, until Jenna touches him and closes his wounds. As he tries to bring Jenna to safety, she refuses to tell him what danger haunts her or how she healed him, but Isaac vows to do whatever it takes to gain her trust...and her heart. Because with just one touch, Isaac knows he wants Jenna to be his - forever.

Disappointing...

After having read the other books in this series, perhaps my expectations were too high. The male protagonist appeared too needed with his constantly spouts of 'I love you' and 'I want to protect you' throughout the majority of the story. It was as if the author didn't have enough of a story so she decided to add these to flesh it out. A pity because the story, and the narrator, was just what kept my interest going.

I liked it a lot!!

To me it was along the same beat as the other books in series. I don't like that Lizzie isn't still a kick ass take names later🙁 I liked seeing/ hearing a strong female character. One of the other reviews complained about repetition yes some but then again, I seen that as how it would be in real life with someone that was in the same situation needing to be convinced. I really enjoyed the book and would recommend it.

Oh yes!

Maya Banks never disappoints. Although KGI & Colter series are my favs, I very much enjoyed this novel as well and now I'm on to pick another one I've not yet listened to.

Another awesomely cheesy book

Love the man who hardly knows the woman but vows to dedicate his life to loving her! This is a cheesy but enjoyable series. I will read all of them because they are adorable.

Disappointing

I usually enjoy Maya Banks stories very much, but this audiobook was not my cup of tea. The story had a lot of potential, but the hero seemed to mostly rant about how he would never let anything happen to the heroine, while everything DID happen to the heroine. I found the storyline a bit disjointed and the phrasing somewhat repetitive throughout the book. The narrator did an okay job of what he had to work with, but it just didn't save the audiobook. Incidentally, I enjoyed the first four audiobooks in this series very much!

This was a hard book for me to rate.

Read for Review/Listened for Fun (Avon/Audible)
Overall Rating: 3.00
Story Rating: 3.50
Character Rating: 2.50

Audio Rating: 4.00 (not part of the overall rating)

Quick Thoughts: This was a hard book for me to rate. I really liked the suspense part and I was madly loving Isaac until his vow of love/you are my everything speech. I can't say exactly what about that moment really made him quite unlikable to me (well I could but it would be a spoiler) but needless to say I fell out of love or even like with the hero. I spent the rest of the book working up to him just being OK. Unfortunately for romance, that just isn't good. Though, I will say while what he said bugged ME, I don't think it will bug everyone else. Plus the rest of the story (action, pacing, other guys) was really right up my alley and pretty darn good :) So I would say give this one a whirl if you have liked the rest of the series.

Audio Thoughts

Narrated By Jeffrey Kafer / Length: 8 hrs and 58 mins

Jeffrey did a really great job with the DSS crew. I really love his narration of this book and he managed to draw me into the moments that really get you in your gut. It is probably because he is so good at his delivery that the one scene that annoyed me stood out. It was a total emotional moment that Jeffrey just nailed. It isn't his fault I didn't like what Isaac had to say LOL

Another great story

I loved this Slow Burn novel. It was a great story by itself but was even better to catch up with the other characters from previous novels.

Great narration

I like this authors books because there is some uniqueness to her stories. One issue I have is in some chapters, it just seems like the character is spiraling and repeating the same thing over again. Chapter 13, if I remember correctly, does just that. One minute everything is great and she seems to be accepting the help and then she’s sitting in a corner mentally spiraling out FOR A WHOLE CHAPTER. It’s too much and whiplash from the interactions just before.

Just One Touch

I didn't enjoy this book as much as previous ones in this series. It's not that the story was bad, but rather how repetitive the prose was. The hero proclaimed his undying love over & over & over again, promising to keep the heroine safe time after time, using the same vows each time. It got annoying, to tell the truth. I was happy when the book ended.

And the narrator was a bit bland; monotone even. I won't be buying anymore in this series or by this narrator. I almost fell asleep listening, lol!
