Publisher's Summary

David Osage is a dangerous man with a complicated past, but these days he’s just trying to keep his head down, driving big rigs.

Until one night, when he saddles himself with a hitchhiker - a nuisance who’s more than she seems - and everything changes. No one was ready for an alien invasion.

Death is raining from the sky, and the only question left is whether you run, fight, or submit. For David Osage and his family, answering is as easy as giving the alien invaders the finger.

It was all right.

I don’t know what it was about the story, but it didn’t grab my attention. It was just OK for me.

Interesting story if you ignore issues

The story is fun and entertaining. The narration is good kept me engaged. But there are several parts where the writing was broken. Pointing a gun at someone only to say a sentence or two later that was not happening. Pulling a ladder up behind you then having an animal walk up it in the next paragraph. Nit picky but annoying to me.

Surprising delight!

** First I have to give recognition to the narrator, Tom Taylorson. He breathed life into this book. His range is phenomenal. I would imagine he's theater trained as he literally becomes each character, which leads credibility and distinction to each personality. I will certainly check out more of his works.

Not my usual genre and I tend to lean more towards character building than action; however, this book takes off running and never runs out of steam.

I have listened to the book from start to finish twice and it is the type of audiobook that I would listen to several more times in the future. I've purchased book 2 and have finished it as well and it is also 5-stars; so go in knowing it doesn't fizzle and peter out after book 1. It remains high quality, quick-paced, and adrenaline levels are at high-octane throughout.

I will use a credit for book 2

It starts fairly dry, and I always have a bit of trouble with an anti hero that has some murderous background, but at the point we are introduced, makes only heroic choices with a “for someone else’s good”decision tree… seems like cheating.

The premise is good, it takes way too long for the alien agenda to be laid out, and the center characters secrets and plots to converge. So basically this is like a series of car chases and running while following one of three characters, and right when you should get some satisfaction that some small element has come together-the end. So I will give book 2 a credit try, but am only rating this one three stars.

Juvenile wiriting

This book reads as though it is the first draft of the first book a 10 or 11 year old would write. A couple of descent ideas … but overall, it’s terrible. I gave up at chapter 16 almost half way through - I stuck with it, knowing it wasn’t very good, but hoping it might be entertaining. Well, if you are still in elementary school, it might be. What finally did it for me was - the main characters (thus far) are in an enemy compound attempting a rescue. In the middle of the rescue …. with hordes of the enemy after them …. the “rescued” character needs to “take a moment to compose herself”, whereupon she proceeds to the restroom “where they still have running water” and for a costume change that includes a crop top under a letterman jacket, and a jury-rigged holster tied to her thigh with a gun in it. Ummm… yeah, if you’re rolling your eyes, just hit the back button and pick something else…. because this is the type of “heartstopping” writing you’ll face throughout this novel. If you’re 10, go for it. On a side note, narrator Tom Taylorson did a good job, especially considering the material.

Unexpectedly fun

Scott Moon has written other books I really liked, but I will be honest. I was dubious going in, but I had a spare credit and wanted to try something I don’t usually do.

I am not a fan of the vampire genre. Imagine my surprise when I really liked this book. Honestly, I thought it would be a hard plough with predictable tropes and all too familiar clichés. I should have known better with this author. It turned out to be a very fun ride. I was entertained from beginning to end, and this was me starting out with a “meh” attitude.

Few can write an anti-hero protagonist like Moon. The main character has a past, but not in the overused ways so many of these stories fall into. The gritty main hero was believable. It’s that jaded guy you know in real life. That guy who can be a real pain but has a good heart.

I listen to audiobooks on my commutes to and from work and doing chores. Where I live, the traffic sucks. It’s nothing to look forward to. With this book, I found myself looking forward to these drives. I was enthusiastic about doing chores.
The story was not predictable. The telling of it was engaging. This is the right narrator for this story.

Highly recommend. Five Stars all around.

Not Terrible

It's not a bad storyline so far. Narration could be a bit better. Tom Taylorsone doesn't do female voices very well. But he does do a good job with the reading. I may follow the series down the road.

Not a fan of the narrator

The narrators female character impressions make every female sound like an abrupt, snotty 10 year that is angry at the entire world. It's just bad. All male characters are good though, as well as the aliens.

The book is good, not amazing but not bad, I'm somewhere between 3-4 stars for it. But since I'm picky and there are a lot of things that did bother me, I go for 3 stars. Some of the plot doesn't make sense and there is a lot of weird just too easy stuff happening, too much is unexplained and I would prefer more information.

Much better than I thought it would be

I very nearly bypassed this audiobook because of its title and cover but was glad I didn't. The story is engaging as are the characters, who are varied, have depth and develop in response to what's required of them. Pleasingly little macho crap or sexist stereotypes but they really need to do something about the audiobook's cover artwork which suggests otherwise.

story ok performance great

the previous reviewer who said female voices were strange is obviously a little harsh in her judgement. I found no problems with the narrator.

Good narration, but not for me

Not in to alien horror stories. Narration was good, but still only managed about an hour. Meh

Beware the marketing ploy of this book

Beware, Very unusual. The volumes in this series are not stand-alone. The "story" ends abruptly - randomly at a chapter -and you have to buy the next volume to continue. Have fun!
