Publisher's Summary

From best-selling and eight-time Christy Award-winning author Lynn Austin comes a remarkable novel of sisterhood and self-discovery set against the backdrop of WWII.

1950. In the wake of the war, Audrey Clarkson leaves her manor house in England for a fresh start in America with her young son. As a widowed war bride, Audrey needs the support of her American in-laws, whom she has never met. But she arrives to find that her longtime friend Eve Dawson has been impersonating her for the past four years. Unraveling this deception will force Audrey and Eve’s secrets - and the complicated history of their friendship - to the surface.

1940. Eve and Audrey have been as different as two friends can be since the day they met at Wellingford Hall, where Eve’s mother served as a lady’s maid for Audrey’s mother. As young women, those differences become a polarizing force...until a greater threat - Nazi invasion - reunites them. With London facing relentless bombardment, Audrey and Eve join the fight as ambulance drivers, battling constant danger together. An American stationed in England brings dreams of a brighter future for Audrey, and the collapse of the class system gives Eve hope for a future with Audrey’s brother. But in the wake of devastating loss, both women must make life-altering decisions that will set in motion a web of lies and push them both to the breaking point long after the last bomb has fallen.

This sweeping story transports listeners to one of the most challenging eras of history to explore the deep, abiding power of faith and friendship to overcome more than we ever thought possible.

This is the best book that I've 'read' for a long

The narrator was great and I loved the story! This is story is something I'd let my young teens read.

Fantastic, as always.

The lives of Eve and Audrey kept my interest the whole way through. It is so very important to never forget the Lord loves his children and is in control.
Sarah Zimmerman did a wonderful job.

Great wholesome historical novel

it's hard to find novels that are wholesome and this one is. The story is well written and the narration is very well done.

Well, done!

What a page-turner. I had a hard time putting this one down. Audrey and Eve were two sides of a coin. So different yet so alike. One completed the other throughout their years as sister/friends. WWII is such an important part of the history of this world. So much to be learned from it. Thank you for writing this story Ms. Austin. And a brilliant performance, Ms. Zimmerman. Well done!

Terrible narrator

Why oh why does Audible not vet their narrators. The book would’ve been okay but you cannot have a narrator that in one sentence goes from American to English to Australian accent. This really spoiled the book and I couldn’t read more than an hour of it before I gave up

Heartwarming story

Loved the story culminating in forgiveness. Excellent story, which gripped me all the way through. However, I was disappointed by the unauthentic English accents. There needed to be more differentiation between Eve and Audrey who would have had very different accents.

Excellent

Brilliant story. The reader pronounced a lot of words wrong so maybe she is an American narrator struggling with British English. However still brilliant.

Mostly a great story

Well researched story, mostly beautifully written. My difficulty (without spoiling) is with the unrealistic conclusion.

Great historical fiction, rushed ending

Spoiler alert. I loved this book for its vivid descriptions of WW2 and the way it completely drew me in to the two girls lives. I was disappointed in the ending, and hope there’s a sequel, so that more truth comes out, not just the bits that make a pretty bow. Eve’s son deserves to meet his father, and his father deserves to know he has a son. I was hoping Tommy would insist on that. It was challenging to think about “some things are better left secret” though. Often no easy answers.
