They say you can’t go home again…

especially if you’re the governing mind for an interstellar military starship.

It's official: Sergeant Henry Morgan has now spent more time as a starship than he spent dead. His mission is more than a century old, but in some ways, he feels like it's just begun.

A desperate distress call from Earth has brought him back to his old cosmic stomping grounds, for your standard save-humanity-from-extinction-by-alien-constructs operation.

But Henry needs to realize something: while his species might be the new kid on the galactic block, it is not without its secrets. Many of them deep and dark, with implications that reach back to the time when he himself walked the Earth on two legs.

In some ways, humanity has become more alien than the extraterrestrials. And if Henry can't figure out what this means—fast—he's going to have serious problems keeping himself and his crew safe.

The next segment of our starship journey has the crew continuing to travel great distances over hundreds of years, meeting more unusual alien species, and making a valiant effort to save what's left of humanity, both from itself and from outside forces. All the while the reconstituted mind of Henry Morgan pieces together the larger meaning of the universe, the alien artifacts and knowledge aboard the ship, and contends with numerous sabotage efforts from parties as yet unknown. The story is full of unexpected and heart-pounding encounters, dire situations, and creative resolutions to both. Each description of new characters and new places paints a vivid picture of the environment and Mark Boyett's superb narration skills reach new levels with multitudes of alien voices on top of the already established human variety. Part 2 is a thrilling listen that creates even more tension and despair while imagining the possible outcomes in Part 3. [Disclosure: I received this title for free and listened at 2.0x.]

Destination: Despair. Is humanity's hope lost?

I'm not one to hold it against an author for letting their personal beliefs influence their work but at certain points I'm just left thinking "alright I get it!". There's nothing wrong with an author trying to encourage their readers to think about certain topics from another perspective, but at least try to be subtle about it. Some parts of this just felt hamfisted

A bit preachy. No pun intended.

These books are great, they contain a lot of different types of subsets together. World building, space battles, large time jumps etc

The author does a great job of stitching it all together so that we can get many different stories and characters over each book so it doesn’t get stale.

Great series continues

this series has grown on me. the relationship between Sergeant Morgan and the crew of the Interchange continues to slowly improve, no doubt due to the fact that despite the hundreds of years the Interchange has been on mission the crew has only been awake for a small number of months. Captain Simi continues to mature in his own acceptance of the "RM" while trying to keep humanity safe from the Scree. I'm very much anxious to see what the author offers in the next book ... and it can't come too soon...

I am enjoying this book a lot, I have no complaints about these books at all. I have re-listened to part 1 and 2 of sets of books at least 3 times.

A great book to dive into.

Thrilling continuation of part 1, which of course had that great homage to WW2's Battle Off Samar in Leyte Gulf! The new intrigue, his limited abilities, was is his actual potential? Who knows! Narration is spot on. I can not wait for part 3!

Such a fun ride!

Scott Bartlett in the first 2 books focused on Henry's existential conflict with the captain, along with planting the seeds of multiple sources of ship overthrow brewing. Books 3&4 took a definite right turn and while continuing the suspense from the earlier books, decided to move the separate story arcs into more of a philosophical and religious direction as the intrepid starship crew and its RM encounter more and more diabolical situations. One example reminded me of Machiavelli's book of The Prince where it touched on topics of excess taxation of the citizens stoking the fires of rebellion which, ultimately, strips the prince of his rule.

I did find that pacing was somewhat fractured going from the end of one chapter to the start of the next. It wasn't a major issue but did have me thinking that some of the author's words has been left out afterward.

Mark Boyett performance was as expected, a wonderful listening experience.

Whoa! Lots going on here

Part 2 picks up where part 1 left off, and it's a good continuation of the story. Scott has his Space Battles, treachery, back stabbing, and real world politics parallels that are standard for him. He also continues to address some of the difficulties with AI, and maybe some difficulties you may encounter if you ever upload your brain into a computer. I found the story engaging, and I'm m looking forward to seeing where it leads with part 3.

The narration is top notch, as is typical for Mark Boyett. He nails all of the characters voices and does a variety of accents well. Although he may want to listen to a couple Filipino people talk to really dial in that accent.

Overall, a great listen, but I'd highly recommend listening to part 1 first, if you just stumbled across this one.

I'm loving this new world. The open questions are being answered and new threats are being introduced. I'm liking the growth of Henry and his relationship with the rest of the crew. One detail I'm particulary liking about this series is its focusing more on character relations and world building and not focusing on describing space battle. The skipping through time is giving an cool way to watch humainit face and taclke new problems across generations.

Books 1 and 2 were fantastic. But what happened? Book 3 took a total 180 and turned into one big political statement.
