In an isolated village in the Icelandic Westfjords, three friends set to work renovating a run-down house. But soon they realize they are not as alone as they thought. Something wants them to leave, and it's making its presence felt. Meanwhile, in a town across the fjord, a young doctor investigating the suicide of an elderly woman discovers that she was obsessed with his vanished son. When the two stories collide, the terrifying truth is uncovered.

Critic Reviews

"Narrator Lucy Paterson's smart pacing and subtle applications of intensity and tone guide listeners through Icelandic author Sigurdardottir's two seemingly unconnected plots and characters.... This intriguing mix of understated horror and mystery offers listeners a unique audio experience." (AudioFile Magazine)

Absolutely terrifying web of misfortune

Through most of this story I was completely freaked out. This is my kind of horror. It isn't gory, it isn't sex ridden, it isn't just humans at their worst and it is blissfully not YA. It IS supernatural, roundabout detective, atmospheric, and scary. I loved the way it all weaved together. It is just awesome in every way, story and narration both great. Well worth 2 credits!!

This is a great ghost story

This story is incredible! I loved the interweaving stories and mystery of how things tie. The tone set by the author gives you that good old ghost story feel. Great characters and scenery established from the beginning.

Completely cliche, but I’m saying it: I wanted to find out what happens, but did not want it to end.

loved it!

A ghost story with a bonus mystery or is that the other way around. I'm off to watch the movie now.

Great Suspense!

This book had a wonderful tightly wound plot.
The language was concise and evoked images of both terror and mystery that were believable and spine chilling. I have heard that one out of ten Icelanders is an author of some sort and I will be a very loyal reader of Sigurdardottir if this book is even remotely like the rest!

Sooo Creeeepy!

Excellent bone-chilling story that was a perfect read for Halloween! Could have done without all the bickering between the three on the island, but by the end, I could see why they would be quarrelsome with each other. Nice twists and turns, and I loved how almost everyone and everything was connected in some way.
Lucy Paterson did an amazing job narrating.

Painfully slow!

Painfully slow and laden with unnecessary detail that did not serve the plot. Characters were not well developed which made it hard to be invested. Can't fault the narrator she was the only reason I plowed through the story.
