About the Creator

Dana Cowin, best known for her two decades as the Editor-in-Chief of Food & Wine, is a tastemaker, talent scout, consultant, author, lecturer, and radio show host. During her tenure at the award-winning magazine (1995-2016), she oversaw every editorial aspect of the brand from print to web to books to social media. She expanded and introduced several programs to highlight emerging talent including the magazine's annual Best New Chefs award. After Food & Wine, Cowin founded DBC Creative, a brand consultancy with clients such as Dig and Neiman Marcus. She is host of Speaking Broadly on Heritage Radio Network where she interviews extraordinary women in the food industry about their greatest challenges and triumphs. She has also launched a coaching business to help people figure out what to do next.

A sought-after speaker, Cowin has been a judge on Bravo’s Top Chef, a presenter at TedXManhattan, a motivational speaker for brands like Bacardi, lecturer at the Food & Wine Classic, and multiple other food festivals and other events. A noted author, Cowin in 2014 published Mastering My Mistakes in the Kitchen: Learning to Cook with 65 Great Chefs and Over 100 Delicious Recipes, which garnered a spot on many "Best of Fall" lists. Cowin serves on the advisory Board of Directors of City Harvest, a hunger-relief organization, Hot Bread Kitchen, a workforce development group, and the Food Education Fund of Food and Finance High School. For her many contributions to the culinary world, Cowin was inducted into the James Beard Foundation's Who’s Who of Food & Beverage in America.

Perfect to listen to while cooking

I was looking for a good cooking companion while getting ready for the holidays and stumbled upon this delightful one-hour listen. Each chef has a fascinating backstory with insight into their lives and unique culture. I loved the latke story! It really reminded me of home... And it gave me inspiration to try out some new recipes - I'm planning to use those on the pdf tomorrow night! Awesome music too. Overall, great listen for while you're in the kitchen.

Stories to Warm the Heart

This short little audiobook is a peek into the holiday traditions that helped to shape these chefs into the men and women they are today. Each chef is from a very different background, and their varied tales, from New York to Nigeria, shows that inspiration begins with those closest to you.

The narrator is personable and I enjoyed her reading style. This is a delightful listen, showing that no matter where you begin, you can become something great, and, no matter where you are, don’t forget your roots.

Mother's on xan

I couldn't handle more than 3 minutes of this. Shit was all over the place. Way too much of a 'mothers on xan' vibe. The story is told at you, not to you

Chefs are people too.

If you like NPR, then you will like this short feature. The chefs give some very intimate details of their personal lives and memories of the Holidays. Of course there is talk of food. But what I really liked is that the chefs each included a recipe in PDF format that comes with this Audio Short.

Downhill originals

Man these monthly audible original selections just keep getting worse and worse every month. This one was especially horrible. Can’t say I got anything at all out of listening to it. Don’t waste your time.

Meh

The overall concept was decent, but this would be better suited as a podcast not an audible story. The time with each chef felt rushed, the personalities did not translate to audio and the recipes discussed, were easier to figure out with the website companion. Also, ending with the sound of people eating into microphones was very unpleasant.

It wasn't what I expected, It turns in random stories about people talking about Christmas but not much in food or how to cook.

Disjointed

This didn't feel like a cohesive, finished, project- more like a rough draft. Some of the voices, including the main host, were pretty hard to listen to. If you want to listen to radio interviews, it might be OK, but if you want an audiobook look elsewhere. I do like the subject matter and even the subjects, it just didn't mesh together for me.
