Publisher's summary

When Eddie Huang found out Tom Hanks had COVID, he made a split-second decision to cop a flight to Taipei. It was in the thick of the pandemic, before we had much information at all besides to mummify ourselves and cry in a corner of our bedrooms listening to James Blake if we wanted to survive. All Eddie wanted was to get in his room, order room service, and enter a 30-day dumpling coma—after which, he figured, this whole thing would be over.

Eddie didn't think twice about throwing his social life away when his life was threatened. He’d never really felt at home in the US, and he’d always told himself that he’d try Taiwan if America ever became too much—mainly because his father’s best stories had taken place there. At first, he just ate mushroom chocolates, hiked in the mountains, and wrote. But as the rest of the world stayed in lockdown, he started meeting up with other Taiwanese friends he'd made over the years. And it was nice, but it still felt like something was missing in those late-night meetups in the Eastern District.

Then he met Ji Twei Fan, a local rapper who became his best friend in Taiwan and his guide to its upside down. Whether it was taking Eddie to the dark basement of a betel nut shop or a legendary spot for sour cabbage pork hot pot, he was always with Ji Twei Fan. As their friendship deepened, he learned more about the life his dad must have lived, and he finally got the courage to ask his dad what he'd wanted to know all these years: how his life had gone sideways in Taipei.

In this funny, tender, and irreverent true story by the creator of Boogie and Fresh Off the Boat, Eddie Huang explores love, friendship, belonging, food, IBS, and family in his unforgettably singular voice.

Compelling review of the ABC experience

Eddie Huang’s way of telling his story that circles back all of his life is inspiring. I’m American-Born Cambodian with parallels to the experiences he’s noted. That being said, if you’re not Asian American, you may feel disconnected to what he’s trying to say. But the point to all this is another perspective that brings you closer to your neighbor, no matter where you are in the world.

Never heard of the guy. Loved it.

I am not cool. My life experience could not be more different from the life experience of the author. I learned from him and appreciate his voice and his language and his spirit. I enjoyed this listen completely. I laughed out loud again and again.

education

The first little while was way too scatological and I thought "groan; not one of those." But as it went on it became quite interesting. Then, as it progressed, even absorbing. By the end I thought I had learned something, and I really do like that in a book.

Excellent for a thought-provoking evening listen, short enough so you don't lose too much sleep.

Sooo much better than the FOB TV series!!

So much better than I expected. Although I'm third generation and older than Eddie, his story was fully relatable. The harsh realities of figuring out where you fit, family and historical trauma, poverty, racism, cultural complexities, etc., are shared life themes. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to him share his personal reflections!

Eddie never disappoints

Homecoming spoke to me on so many levels. As someone who follows Eddie on Instagram and was constantly in awe of the food he posted during the 2020 pandemic, this story really brought into focus his ongoing journey to understand himself.

i like Eddie.

Great slice of life. Eddie takes us into his world and his perception of it. Its quick and entertaining, but not surface. There's more to it. He's a great narrator.

Interesting Fun Listen

Dr. Huang of West Sacramento just replicated the crown I swallowed. It took less than two hours because a scanner sent the pattern across the hall to a diamond cutting machine that got busy . . . pretty soon and over a thousand dollars later, I had my tooth! Sure enough, Eddie did not disappoint either! I had a neighbor in San Francisco, Marlene Chong from Hawaii. Eddie sounds like Marlene talking about art and sense of humor and cool clothes and not-cool clothes. For very bright artistic people, the humor can be extremely subtle. Being an old white lady, I didn't get all the references, but I do appreciate Eddie's love of family and praise for this country's opportunities for those who make an effort. Thank you, Audible and thank you, Eddie Huang!

Tearssss

Eddie Huang has a way of writing the Asian American experience that I don’t hear from many others. He’s also from Orlando, his description of Florida is on point. I’m a Filipina American from Miami, tho we are not 100% the same, only few others I’ve ever made me feel seen the way Eddie does. I always jump to listening anything new from him and this def didn’t disappoint.
