Dissapointed

As an experienced clinician, I am very well informed about Attachment theory and am very keen to learn more about how to help clients in relationships using attachment based skills. However, definitely the style of narration and perhaps some parts of the writing style, I find very off putting. It comes accross as a novel, the narration aimed at showing the acting skills/ skills at narrating different characters. - nót as a book with skills that contains stories of real people, aimed for real people to apply. The hard copy may be different.

Quality information, but too many lists

I would recommend buying the book in paper, to get the full use of it.

Overall good book, annoying narration

The book iitself is fine, although feels superficial. It’s ok for couples therapy where none of the partners has a decent dose of personality dysfunction, in particular narcissistic personality structure where these techniques could potentially make a vulnerable partner even more so. It assumes both parties are invested in the relationship equally, often not the case. So it feels somewhat superficial to me. The female narrator does the most annoying, pathetic, weak female voice impersonification that was difficult to listen to. I am surprised Sue Johnston allowed it to be released as such. I certainly wouldn’t have had it been my book!

Great content, great narration

Not only has the content of this book radically changed how I view the world (for the better I do believe), but the narration is really superb.

Good - with one minus in the end

Very good when it comes to Relationships

but

almost retracted a star ⭐ when Sue in the end went into a more 'general life-view' topic and said:

'compassion can be learned from the bible, KORAN & buddhism'

I invite her to get a deeper knowledge on the topic of Mohammed & the koran, before making such claims, on a topic she knows little about.

Most important book ever written

Honestly, where to start? This book is simply the most important (okay, one of the most important) book ever written! If everyone would read this and try it out, the world would be a better place.

So-so experience

Great content, but read in a way that creates dreadful gender stereotypes of dumb men and helpless women.

Very well put together

Not just the content but also the way it was read. Beautiful job. I don't think I would have captured the spirit of the book from just reading it. Well done!

Not just for couples

I’ve seen another review saying this was just for couples. Not at all. I’ve been able to reflect on past relationships and the mistakes in communication that I made. I’ve worked out how my traumas have affected my relationships and why I’m drawn to avoidant men. Thoroughly valuable for everyone.

Different than I expected - for couples only

I'm single and I expected a more general advice from this book. It's targeted mostly at marriages and loong term couples. It's also a bit vague - hard to pinpoint the advices.
A decent book overally, just not for me.

Changed my marriage in an instant

So many relationship books give great advice and ideas on how to cope with partners' difficult behaviours and ways of interacting. This book goes to the core of our being and touches on the parts of all of us that need love and nurturing. The research and case studies are presented in an accessible way that have allows even the most reluctant and disengaged of partners to connect and revise the story of love in that relationship. This book has changed me and my marriage from the moment I got through the first chapter. In a week, my marriage is more connected and fulfilling than it has been in 6 years! Thank you Dr Johnson!

Changed my life

If every human on earth read this book, it would be a very different place indeed. For most of my life I have been emotionally inept due to a number of influencing factors, and almost lost my marriage. The teachings in this book have helped me to rescue - and will ensure the longevity of - my marriage. Can't recommend highly enough!

What a revelation

This beautiful lovingly written book is so nourishing and enlightening. I absolutely marveled the message in the book and I feel so fortunate to find it. It doesn't matter how old you are and what is your current status. Read it withan open heart and you will not regret it.

Love is the answer after all

The key messages of this book were great and much more compassionate than some similar books on attachment etc- we are all seeking love and safety but we have very different ways of seeking it. Loving relationships are incredibly important, so we need to understand how our partners seek safety to respond and support one another in healing and in life.

I did listen to it slowly, because I didn’t like the narration. Some of the text is examples of couples arguing and the narrator used exaggerated ‘distressed womens’ voices and ‘disassociated mens’ voices’ to which I found hard to listen to. A calm voice would have been much nicer to the nervous system. The content of the book I found really interesting

This is powerful!

This is my second time listening to the book. This time it hit home, I got a lot more out of the content.
The viewpoints are solid and genuinely worth trying. It'll be scary and uncomfortable to get going and require a lot of courage but I can see the value of it.

This book ought to be a staple item on every couple's toolkit.
