Publisher's Summary

Explore the captivating history of the Vietnam War!

The Vietnam War represented a watershed not only in American and Vietnamese history but also internationally. It wasn’t just a battle between two nations, but between two ideologies, two military strategies, and a fight for the hearts and minds of two vastly different national populations.

Few conflicts in global history symbolize as much as Vietnam. From the civil rights movement to the role of the media in warfare, the Vietnam War was unique in the sense that it could not be contained as a military matter but transcended every area of Vietnamese and American society. The word "Vietnam" describes an era of history, not just an isolated war in a small nation in Southeast Asia. It is the lens through which the America and Vietnam of today must be interpreted. Few conflicts have or will ever shape the world as much as the Vietnam War.

Some of the topics and questions covered in this audiobook include:

  • The French and the First Indochina War
  • Out of the frying pan, into the fire: The government of Ngo Dinh Diem
  • Pragmatism and idealism
  • The death of two Catholic presidents

A Captivating Guide to the Second Indochina War a very well written. Seldom it's better to go quickly through major events in History to get the bigger picture and see the forest for the trees so to speak. This book will present that for you.

An excellent summary of a complex topic. Use this as the starting point for more detailed research if necessary. For me, it included what I needed to know.

Easy to understand and very informative.

After listening to this book I realize a little better why I didn't know much about the war and why we were there in the first place - we weren't thought to know! Too bad we can't seem to learn from our errors. Easy to understand and very informative.

Fantastic

He is a great writer who tells the story from personal experience. This is not meant to be a just historical review of all sides. That in mind, it is outstanding.

Very eye-opening and informative.

Originally, I believed this book was mainly about the U.S.'s involvement in the Vietnam War. Of course, it is, though there's history prior to this event that is solid as well, mainly, the reflection of the French. The Vietnamese, as you will discover, are a very hard-working and resilient people; seriously underrated in their skills. Very eye-opening and informative.

So it is an excellent work for people who don't know a lot about Vietnam already, and who want to read a complete history, but not so good for someone who already has a strong background.

Any additional comments?

I liked very much the author's style, typical for a writer that had lived all the events described in this book. This is so the most comprehensive book about this war, full of first-hand accounts.

Strong Subject with Powerful Consequences

Any additional comments?

A pretty accurate study of not just the military dimension but the underlying political motives and manoeuvers which built and maintained the 'Vietnam war'. The writer has an older but never unbelieving position which not surprisingly shows the corrupt acts of the few that performed suffering for the many.

Military history buffs may be failed, however, this book isn't just story-telling. It demonstrates simply how this war opened and how the US power bought with it. For anyone who wants to know this war, history buff or not,
