Publisher's summary

"Antony Ferguson transports listeners to London in late 1983 for a mystery involving a mummy, a giant ruby, and a murder...The sharp writing and Ferguson's narration capture all the bizarre twists and turns."—AudioFile Magazine

London, 1893: deadly doings are afoot in the British Museum and private enquiry agents Cyrus Barker and Thomas Llewelyn must unravel a mystery involving a mummy, a giant ruby and a murder, in Will Thomas's Heart of the Nile.

Cyrus Barker, along with his former assistant and now partner Thomas Llewelyn, is the premier enquiry agent in all of 19th-century London, and beyond. They've thwarted the designs of villains and crooks off all sorts, helped Scotland Yard crack their most challenging cases, and worked for the Her Majesty's Government at the very highest levels. But nothing has been quite as challenging and dangerous as the latest case that comes to find them.

In 1893, a volunteer at the British Museum makes a startling discovery. When examining a mummy in the museum's collection, he discovers there is a giant ruby in the shape of a heart buried in the chest of the mummy. Even more startling, the mummy might well be Cleopatra. The following morning, the volunteer is found floating in the Thames and the ruby has gone missing. Hired by the victim’s wife to learn the truth behind his death, Barker and Llewelyn find themselves in the crosshairs—now they must avoid a violent street gang, a ruthless collector, and the British Museum itself in order to find the killer and safeguard the gem.

Always a favorite

Barker and Llewelyn in another adventure. This one is interesting, complex, and dry as the desert. That last statement is a good thing for they’re chasing the Heart of the Nile.

Entertaining

Another entertaining book in the series. Utterly relieved it wasn’t the “Thomas and Rebecca have a baby” story. I enjoy the books in the series focused on the case.

A bit OTT but still engaging

Far-fetched in many places but not so much so as to spoil it completely. I particularly enjoyed The British Museum venue.

A Brilliant Addition to This Series

I have read most of the books in the Barker and Llewellyn series. The feeling of place, time, character and plot are masterfully interwoven in this latest edition. This series is like a mash up of Sherlock Holmes and Bertie Wooster. Very Grimm, but with a dark and knowing sense of humor. The voices of the many different characters are brilliantly performed by the narrator. This book was pure entertainment from beginning to end, and I look forward to the authors next entry.

One of the best ones in the series.

I enjoy all of these books. Some of them more than others. I own most of them and listen to them multiple times. There are some that I like more than others though. Not because it wasn’t a good story or a poor performance but I think some are more difficult to hear about more than once. Like “The Hellfire Conspiracy” is a good story but it’s hard to listen about young girls being savaged and taken.

This story was a good one. I feel like Llewelyn’s character has grown and matured to become not so reliant on Barker. He sets off on his own several times and he offers up good critical and logical points more often. This is a great character duo and I love Antony Ferguson’s performance of these characters. If they ever do a TV or movie about these books I’m going to have a hard time not being critical of the actors because it won’t be the same. I liked this one and felt like it was a good addition to the series.
