Interesting

This book was well written and easy to read. I enjoyed this look into legends and myths that I really had no knowledge of.

The Legends and Myths of Hawaii

This is a good collection, with a fairly lengthy historical introduction preceding the stories. I found the writing to be a bit dry, but not beyond what can be expected for this type of book. I think the narrator was a very good choice for this project, and did a good job with what he was given.

A different kind of folklore

I found this book to be interesting, informative and entertaining. I really liked the story telling style in which it was written and Mr. Markert really brought the stories to life with his narration. The legends and myths of Hawaii, I found, are so very different from all of the other mythologies and folklore that I have read about. The people are colorful and very passionate in love and in war. Their ethics were much looser than other cultures I have read about, with their inter-marrying and lack of consequences for some offences, such as murder. Gods were very tangible and even accessible at times.

from the kings lips to are ears

Most of my knowledge of Hawaiian mythology and folk tales came from Hawaii 5-0, Elvis Presley, or pirate books.

So thank you... to the author for compiling theys stories for the world to hear and for all thouse who lived or wrote they's actient passages for future generations.

Isn’t there a Hawaiian narrator that could’ve done this?

I am Hawaiian, so these stories are especially meaningful to me. While the narrator makes a good effort, the mispronunciation of the Hawaiian language really disappoints. The way he says “Ka’iulani” in particular was horrible, this iconic and beloved last princess of the Kingdom of Hawaii is one known to all Hawaiians and his pronunciation of her name confirmed to me that this narrator has no idea who she was and should not be narrating these stories.

Captivating history

It is interesting that even though Hawaii is a part of America, it can seem like a foreign land. Hawaii’s history is so different from what us on the main land went through. It was nice to get some of that background before we got the mythology. It helped provide some context for the stories. The myths painted a joyful picture of the people that was entertaining hear. The narrator did a fantastic job telling these stories.

Being a lover of all things, Hawaiian, I am actually going to buy this book so that I have it in my personal library. the way that it combines history with mythology helps you to understand where the mythology portion of it comes to play based on history it’s absolutely brilliant. How did I not come about it until now?

Long but Interesting!

I was initially somewhat disappointed to learn that the work covered only as far as the coming of Capt. Cook. That said, there was plenty of history to explore! Interesting to learn more about the pronunciation of names as well at the history of legends and myths. The reader did a great job. Recommended!

Dry

This will help you learn a lot about Hawaiian history if you can stay awake. I found the perform perfunctory and monotone is some places. It does appear to be very well researched.
