In 1897, as a White oligarchy made plans to allow the United States to annex Hawai'i, native Hawaiians organized a massive petition drive to protest. Ninety-five percent of the native population signed the petition, causing the annexation treaty to fail in the US Senate. This event was unknown to many contemporary Hawaiians until Noenoe K. Silva rediscovered the petition in the process of researching this book. With few exceptions, histories of Hawai'i have been based exclusively on English-language sources.

Folks used to say that the “Sun never sets on the British Empire” as a means of declaring Britain’s greatness. But it was the Portuguese who forged the first truly global empire. The major dominions of the Portuguese wrapped around the globe in a straight line, from Brazil to Angola, from Mozambique to India, and all the way to Macau. With its dominion under multiple time zones, the Sun, in fact, never did set on the Portuguese Empire.

Informative
Enjoyed the brief history. Good summary provided a skeletal outline. The background picked up and became more interesting, starting with Captain Cook's discovery and afterwards. More information preceding, if known, would have been helpful. Similarly, more information about Pearl Harbor attack and during WW II would have been appreciated. Would recommend to others.

Brought Hawaii to life for me
Very detailed and interesting history. I learned more than I thought I would. I will probably plan a visit to the islands in the near future.

a rich history of beautiful islands
having spent about a year on 1 of the islands, I enjoyed the continued learning. even though I loved the opportunity afforded by being part of the US, it would be nice to see these islands returned to the native Hawai'ians, should they so desire
the narrator was very good in most of the pronunciations, only faltering a few times near the end. I still prefer him, much more, than another regular narrator employed by CH. 😉

Eye opening story about a beautiful land
This tells the story of Hawai’i from ancient times to modern. The early history is quite intriguing. The unflinching look at contact with European, British, and America shows how these external powers radically changed Hawaii and it’s people.
This is the first Captivating History audiobook narrated by Jason Saffir I really enjoyed his speaking style and look forward to hearing more from him in the future.

Great Overview
This is a really good overview of Hawaiian history and culture. I disagree with the previous reviewer in that I thought the Hawaiian viewpoint was well represented. There is an in-depth explanation on the various pronouncuatilns of Hawai'i was made.

Terrible
He didn’t pronounce a single Hawaiian word right. Not even Hawai’i. This history is told from the perspective of a Caucasian, and some of the history needs to be fact checked. Just like how the Hawaiians thought CPT Cook represented the Hawaiian god Lono. It has been documented that was not their response by other scholars and the white race confused being welcomed by thinking the Hawaiians thinking he was a god.
