Lili‘uokalani
Acerca de esta escucha
In 1893, Liliuokalani, the Queen of Hawaii, was deposed and five years later her nation became an incorporated territory of the United States.
Published shortly after these momentous events, her book Hawaii's Story by Hawaii's Queen is an incredibly personal history of the islands that she was born to rule. Liliuokalani covers from her birth in 1838 through the reigns of her forebears to her own turbulent time as Queen of the Hawaiian Islands.
Written to explain to the world the injustice of her situation and to reclaim the sovereignty which she had lost, the Chicago Daily Tribune claimed that "no scholar or lawyer could have state[d] it more effectively." But despite her persuasive prose Hawaii never again regained its independence or its monarchy.
Hawaii's Story by Hawaii's Queen is a fascinating history of one of the United States of America's smallest but most unique states as it was going through significant change at the turn of the 20th century.
Queen Liliuokalani was the last reigning monarch of the kingdom of Hawaii. She ascended the throne in January of 1891, upon the death of her brother, King David Kalakaua. For years after her overthrow, the Queen sought redress in the Congress and courts of the United States, but her efforts failed. Her autobiographical history Hawaii's Story by Hawaii's Queen is the only work by a Hawaiian monarch and provides insight into her fight to regain her throne and life on Hawaii during the late-19th century.

The Hawaiian kingdom was tiny, and the big world was huge. The 19th century was the high water mark of Western imperialism, worldwide, and the great powers were planting their flags across the Pacific. Hawai'i was in their sights. By late in the century, two strong American currents were running: one east from the islands, one west from the continent. Sugar plantations had become Hawai'i's biggest moneymaker. In Unfamiliar Fishes, Sarah Vowell argues that 1898 might be a year just as crucial to our nation's identity, a year when, in an orgy of imperialism, the United States annexed Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and Guam, and invaded Cuba and then the Philippines, becoming a meddling, self-serving, militaristic international superpower practically overnight. Of all the countries the United States invaded or colonized in 1898, Vowell considers the story of the Americanization of Hawaii to be the most intriguing.

Are you interested in the history of one of the most isolated kingdoms on Earth? Then this audiobook is for you! When most people hear the phrase “ancient Hawaii”, it brings up a certain air of mystery and intrigue. Some might think of tattooed tribesmen sailing across the vast emptiness of the Pacific Ocean under the moonlight, dancing around campfires to connect with their gods, or living on the sides of volcanos. But is this an accurate depiction? Or is there more to the early people of Hawaii?

Historia
In this unusually personal document, Queen Liliʻuokalani paints a detailed picture of life in a royal family—something few such figures ever attempt. She shares important memories from her childhood and chronicles her life on the international stage, beginning with her momentous ascension to the throne and ending with her effective overthrow by American businessmen and politicians who had little interest in maintaining Hawaii’s autonomy.

Just how did the ancient Hawaiians sail thousands of miles of open ocean without modern methods, without getting lost, and somehow finding new islands? How did such a rich culture even come to exist on perhaps the most isolated archipelago in the world? And is the nickname of a “beach island paradise” an accurate description of the various kinds of beautiful, intriguing, and sometimes even dangerous topographies and natural phenomena that make up Hawai'i? Learn the true answers to all these questions and much more in this audiobook of the history of Hawai'i.

Historia
A thriving monarchy had ruled over Hawaii for generations. Taro fields and fish ponds had long sustained native Hawaiians but sugar plantations had been gradually subsuming them. This fractured, vulnerable Hawaii was the country that Queen Lili‘uokalani, or Lili‘u, inherited when she came to power at the end of the nineteenth century.

We live in a place everyone calls paradise. Sure, Kauai’s beautiful, with empty beaches, drip-castle mountains, and perfect surf...but we’ve been "camping" for six months, eating boiled chicken feed for breakfast, and wearing camouflage clothes so no one sees us trespassing in our jungle hideout. The cockroaches leave rainbow colors all over everything from eating the crayons we left outside the tent, and now a tractor is coming to scrape our camp into the river. Standing in front of the tent in my nightgown, I know my own truth: I just want to be normal.

The powerful debut novel from Alan Brennert, Moloka’i tells the story of Rachel Kalama, a seven-year-old Hawaiian girl who contracts leprosy and is quarantined on the island of Moloka’i during the 1890s. Separated from her family and forced to grow up in the leper colony of Kalaupapa, Rachel experiences intense isolation. But she remains strong, finding moments of joy, and even love. Emotional
The narrator's performance put you there at that time and place alongside with Lili'okalani.
Her Majesty Lili'uokalani 's story is so eloquently written, resonating her passion and devotion for her people and country with grace and humility, regardless of the trials she endured.

What an elegant leader!
Such a great slice of life over 100 years ago that really tells a poignant observation. It tells me things have not progressed all that much when it comes to Greed and Corruption from powerful white men. It's a cautionary tale that we should heed. I am ashamed at times to be a white male knowing how we treated the Hawaiians, American Indians and other people of color.

Our Queen’s Story
I thought the narrator of this book did an excellent job. She spoke clearly, plainly and pronounced the Hawaiian words correctly. Her heart was definitely in this read. I could imagine Queen Lili’uokalani, herself talking story with me. I will listen to this again and I do recommend it for everyone. I especially recommend it for the Hawaiian people.

Improper pronunciation is very distracting
I tried listening to this version, and the voice actor is talented and seems to have made an attempt to learn the basics of Hawaiian phonetics, but mispronounced “Hawaiian” as “Havaiʻian” throughout the book. This is incorrect and very distracting, especially considering how frequently this word appears in the text. Although it is fine to pronounce “Hawaiʻi” as “Havaiʻi”, “Hawaiian” is an English word lacking an ʻokina and it isn’t pronounced that way. Additionally, the reader mispronounced “Honolulu” as “Hanalulu”. There is another version available for purchase, and the reader’s pronunciation is much better.
