Kevin Taylor is an Internet-famous handyman on a mission: Find a house and renovate it in 30 days. By flipping a derelict house in a month's time and chronicling the entire thing on video for his online subscribers, he seeks to become a star. The problems that plague this property will require more than elbow grease to fix, however. Shadows throughout the home are distorted, and an enigmatic trespasser keeps showing up in his footage. Worse still are the hideous voices that issue from otherwise empty rooms in the dead of night.

Story
A series of brutal home invasions terrified Los Angeles in 1937. They ended in Chicago a year later with the arrest of African American teenager Robert Nixon, igniting racial tensions in an already appallingly divided city. Tortured in custody and portrayed by the press in the most lurid and flagrantly racist terms, Nixon faced an all-white jury. It would be the fastest conviction in the history of Cook County. The case against Nixon is a still-relevant examination of bigotry, suppressed rage, and the making of a murderer.

Publisher's Summary
The fate of a lonely girl becomes part of a town’s shameful secret history in Thriller Award winner Jennifer McMahon’s terrifying story of guilt, retribution, and one tragic Halloween night.
Thirty-four years ago, on October 31, poor Hannah Talbott took part in a scavenger hunt gone violently wrong. The mean girls made sure of it. To this day, for a haunted local mother, the most unsettling Halloween costume of all is an urban legend they call Hannah-Beast. It’s a reminder of the past she can’t forget. Especially tonight when it’s come back, so close to home.
Jennifer McMahon’s Hannah-Beast is part of Dark Corners, a collection of seven heart-stopping short stories by bestselling authors who give you so many new reasons to be afraid. Each story can be read in a single sitting. Or, if you have the nerve, you can listen all by yourself in the dark.

Excellent story !
Love this story. However the narrator on regular speed was really difficult to listen to. I had to put it to 125% speed. Once I did that it was really enjoyable listen. Sufficiently scary and sad at the same time. Love Jennifer McMahon!

Incredibly flawed, but...
Hannah-Beast is the story of a young mother who played part in something terrible when she was in the tween to early teen stage of her life. The story bounces back between mother and her Halloween duties in 2016 and what her group of middle school friends did to an unfortunately unpopular girl in 1982.
There are so many flaws with this short story, but I will say that I was entertained. If I didn't know what wanted to happen at the end, I wouldn't have finished it, even though it was only two hours long. It's an okay short story, but no where near scary and no where near great. I would give it one word as "okay." A lot of people are complaining about Amy Landon in these "Dark Corners Amazon Originals," but I really don't have a problem with her narration. No, she is not the best by any means, but I don't find her lifeless and dull like others did.
So, the story is going to get a grade of a solid 'D' from me and Amy Landon will get a B-. Listen to it if you need a quick story, but know that the bouncing back between 1982 and 2016 is incredibly frequent--almost nauseatingly so.

Delightfully Creepy
Hannah-Beast is the first in the Dark Corners Collection--Novellas written by various famous authors. I love that they are about 2 hours long... perfect to listen to on a short road trip. Jennifer McMahon is one of my favorite authors, so it was a no brainier to try the series.
This one was very dark, indeed. My husband, son, and I listened to it in the car and we were almost uncomfortable, but in a good way.
I am looking forward to the next one, by Lisa Unger.

Mean girls grow up.
SPOILER ALERT: Anyone with a teenage child knows what the end is going to be. Understandably the mom is so deep into her own pain that she misses out on obvious signals.
The book was well written making recognize the mean girls and how awful middle school can be. The narrator did an excellent job.
