Publisher's summary

He went on the road expecting the worst of America, but what if the worst of America was also in him? This is the unsettling story of a man in a midlife crisis and his unexpected awakening, by award-winning writer Emily Raboteau.

Poison-tongued film critic Reginald Wright is known for his creative insults and intolerance for the garbage culture, insufferable rudeness, and thoughtless racism of predictably common people. Now, against his better judgment, and with a marriage in crisis, he’s attempting a getaway in the Poconos that quickly fulfills his every low expectation. In fact, it’s becoming a nightmare. And that’s just what Reginald needs to wake up.

Emily Raboteau’s The Tangled Woods is part of Dark Corners, a collection of seven heart-stopping short stories by bestselling authors who give you so many new reasons to be afraid. Each story can be read in a single sitting. Or, if you have the nerve, you can listen all by yourself in the dark.

Piece of c**p book

If you think all cops, guns, and white people are bad, then this is the book for you! Just one cliche after another. Immediately after crossing the border from NY to PA, the family gets cut off by someone. Of course it's someone in a pickup w/ a 'make America great again' bumper sticker, because those are the only types of people that act this way, right? They then get pulled over for speeding (racing another driver and weaving in and out of traffic) and the 7 year son starts crying because he's afraid his father will be shot by the big bad policeman. When the officer is the most friendly and kind person you can meet (and lets them off w/ not even a warning), the family still thinks there's some ulterior motive.
The author clearly has issues and is projecting them onto her characters. I listened to about 25 minutes of this mess of a book and deleted it. Worst book I have ever tried to listen to.

Terrible!

I only listened to this all the way thru just to give it a fair chance. The plot is non existent and the characters horrible clichés. I have enjoyed most of the dark corners series but this was a total bomb. It was not frightening or suspenseful in the least and the only scary thing about it is that fact it ever made it past an editor.

Couldn’t even finish it, only got a few minutes in...

...before I got so fed up with the constant negative comments of the MC switching back and forth between being RACIST, Depressed, secretly hating his family and ANTI-TRUMP. It’s everything I hate all in one. The last thing I want to do in my unwind time is to get all riled up. Putting this author on my list of do not read/listen.

Absolutely horrible

I normally don’t write reviews but for this one I’ll make a exception. I could not even get past the first chapter, if I wanted to hear a author’s opinion about politics then I would specifically look for a book on that subject. The author pushes her opinions on the reader/listener. I’m looking to get away from the drama of the real world.

Cliche and just bad

Written by someone trying to hard. Bad story all around. Not to mention the totally unlikable, irredeemable main character.

It may not be called racism, but when you teach your children to hate and you do as well, how do you not expect for that hate to

Very first story plays the victim card when a white person is doing their job and is in no way being either racist or unprofessional. Yet the POC are being argumentative as well racist. How is this even allowed? Because it is written directed at whites? Audible has become very disappointing in the last few weeks and along with titles like “My husband’s side bitch” I can tell how intellectually corrupt Audible is going to go. Keep up with such stellar offerings and I will cancel my subscription.

Racist

This book is horrible. Its written from a black man's perspective but its also written by a White Woman. It is gross and I am disgusted Amazon is supporting it.

Just awful

I tried so very hard to finish this story but didn’t make it all the way through. The characters are completely unlikable, the child is ridiculously slow witted and painfully immature even for a 7 year old, and it reads so smugly that I was irritated after the first paragraph. I’m new to this but have made my way through several other horrible stories and wasted time I can never have back but THIS one is the first I wasted extra time to review because it is truly that bad.

No plot, not suspenseful

I rarely give my opinion, I'm making an exception: Struggled to finish to give it a a fair chance. It was a waste of my time.
Had it been longer I could not have finished it. If it were not included for free, I'd return it for a refund.
