Story
Many of us dread having to convey our ideas to others, often feeling ill-equipped, anxious, and awkward. Public speaking experts help by focusing on planned communication experiences such as slide presentations, pitches, or formal talks. Yet, most of our professional and personal communication occurs in spontaneous situations that creep up on us and all too often leave us flustered and stumbling for words. Stanford lecturer, podcast host, and communication expert Matt Abrahams provides tangible, actionable skills to help even the most anxious of speakers succeed when speaking spontaneously.

Story
As David Brooks observes, “There is one skill that lies at the heart of any healthy person, family, school, community organization, or society: the ability to see someone else deeply and make them feel seen—to accurately know another person, to let them feel valued, heard, and understood.” And yet we humans don’t do this well. All around us are people who feel invisible, unseen, misunderstood. In How to Know a Person, Brooks sets out to help us do better, posing questions that are essential for all of us: If you want to know a person, what kind of attention should you cast on them?

We live in a world that’s obsessed with talent. We celebrate gifted students in school, natural athletes in sports, and child prodigies in music. But admiring people who start out with innate advantages leads us to overlook the distance we ourselves can travel. We underestimate the range of skills that we can learn and how good we can become. We can all improve at improving. And when opportunity doesn’t knock, there are ways to build a door.

Arnold’s stratospheric success happened as part of a process. As the result of clear vision, big thinking, hard work, direct communication, resilient problem-solving, open-minded curiosity, and a commitment to giving back. All of it guided by the one lesson Arnold’s father hammered into him above all: be useful.

Speed has gotten a bad name in business, much of it deserved. When Facebook made "Move fast and break things" an informal company motto, it fueled a widely held belief that we can either make progress or take care of people, one or the other. That a certain amount of wreckage is the price we have to pay for inventing the future. Leadership experts Frances Frei and Anne Morriss argue that this belief is deeply flawed—and that it keeps you from building a great company.

It’s time to stop second-guessing yourself and start building the qualities that will make you an authentic, amazing leader. In the past century, women have scaled new heights in the workplace. From working as clerks and secretaries in the 1950s, women today are now holding top positions in the world’s largest corporations. Yet, women remain vastly underrepresented in leadership roles, making up only five percent of Fortune 500 CEOs, and 10 percent of top management positions in S&P 1500 companies, despite accounting for 47 percent of the labor workforce.

Story
There is a voice of longing inside each woman. We strive so mightily to be good: good partners, daughters, mothers, employees, and friends. We hope all this striving will make us feel alive. Instead, it leaves us feeling weary, stuck, overwhelmed, and underwhelmed. We look at our lives and wonder: Wasn’t it all supposed to be more beautiful than this? We quickly silence that question, telling ourselves to be grateful, hiding our discontent—even from ourselves.

The Roadmap to Success
- By LadyH on 06-21-23
By: Carla A. Harris
Publisher's summary
Noted fashion entrepreneur and former McKinsey & Company consultant Lisa Sun shares the eight strengths that every woman can call upon to be confident and successful.
In her groundbreaking book, fashion entrepreneur Lisa Sun challenges traditional notions of confidence with a new approach to living with self-assurance. What she’s learned from thousands of conversations with women from dressing rooms to boardrooms is that we feel genuinely confident when we value and deploy our strengths. Those strengths come in many forms, not just a singular ideal.
Backed by quantitative research, Sun expands the definition of gravitas with an inclusive and uplifting vocabulary for confidence. She’s identified eight superpowers—leading, performing, achieving, giving, knowing, creating, believing, self-sustaining—and helps listeners discover via a quiz which of these they naturally exhibit, aka their “confidence language.” Packed with proven tools for personal and professional advancement, Sun helps listeners identify and nurture their confidence language and work through challenging situations, turning moments of self-consciousness into self-confidence.

In fact, there are incentives for many of us to stay silent. Why speak up if you know that it won’t be received, and in fact, often makes things worse? In Unlearning Silence, Hering explores how we’ve learned to be silent, how we’ve benefited from silence, how we’ve silenced other people—and how we might choose another way.

Gravitas can seem like an elusive, intangible quality, but it isn't about adopting the style of another or being someone you're not. Newton draws on extensive research and experience coaching business leaders to show what underpins authentic gravitas and how anyone can develop it.

Powerful support for all professional women
With a characteristic meticulousness of a former McKinsey consultant, Lisa studies the sources of confidence and how they are different from individual to individual methodically and with the help of a thorough quantitative research. The study definitely adds credibility and strong foundation to her findings, not to mention, becomes the basis of a fun, and scarily accurate Quiz that helps you identify individual strengths/sources of confidence. She goes on to explore why many "female" sources of confidence are under-appreciated in a male-dominated leadership world, and what we can do about it. It is her stories of personal exploration from her clients, and from herself, that I found especially empowering. Lisa courageously details her own vulnerabilities and what it took her to overcome her downs. The book is voiced-over by Lisa herself, which adds an intimate touch. This is an empowering book for every female: early in her career, or with a few decades behind her belt, that helps better understand her own super-powers and utilize them for her personal and professional growth.
