NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A practical, heartfelt guide to the art of truly knowing another person and fostering deeper connections at home, at work, and throughout our lives—from the author of The Road to Character and The Second Mountain

As David Brooks observes, “There is one skill that lies at the heart of any healthy person, family, school, community organization, or society: the ability to see someone else deeply and make them feel seen—to accurately know another person, to let them feel valued, heard, and understood.”

And yet all around are people who feel invisible, unseen, misunderstood. In How to Know a Person, Brooks sets out to help us do better, posing essential questions: If you want to know a person, what kind of attention should you cast on them? What kind of conversations should you have? What parts of a person’s story should you pay attention to?

Driven by his trademark sense of curiosity and determination to grow as a person, Brooks draws from the fields of psychology and neuroscience and the worlds of theater, philosophy, history, and education to present a welcoming, hopeful, integrated approach to human connection. How to Know a Person helps readers become more understanding and considerate toward others, and to find the joy that comes from being seen. Along the way it offers a possible remedy for a society that is riven by fragmentation, hostility, and misperception.

The act of seeing another person, Brooks argues, is profoundly creative: How can we look somebody in the eye and see something large in them and, in turn, see something larger in ourselves? How to Know a Person is for anyone searching for connection, and yearning to be understood.

I purchased the book because I have long been a fan of David Brooks’ writing. I was concerned that it would be another book of blah blah blah with information that could not be utilized, but I was wrong. It’s well researched, interestingly presented information that i can integrate into my relationships. I think it will help me as the matriarch of a family with children and grandchildren who I very much want to feel “seen”. Thank you.

Great topic, well presented.

This book has provided a lot of insight. I use to feel that I knew how to listen and comprehend the spoken and unspoken language that those around me spoke. After reading this I’ve learned that there’s so much i don’t know about everyone. We never fully understand people the way we think we do and that’s a gift. That just means there is always more to learn. If you’re a psychology student like I am, this will be the perfect read for you.

Very helpful

I thought I was good at knowing people, but listening to David’s book has stunned me. There are layers and layers of untouched territory in asking meaningful questions, simply quietly being present that David’s book uncovers. I am listening a second time, recommending it to my friends and purchasing a hard copy so I can underline parts.

His Insight and practical suggestions

Exactly what I needed from this book. An educated inside on having deeper connections with people, specially at a time of so much superficial bonds. Loved the tempo of the book- though I did play it at 1.2, and I could actually imagine him speaking of these subjects over a dinner table. Will definitely share with my book club.

Did NOT disappoint.
