Publisher's Summary

The Fens are burning, and Detective Nikki Galena faces a cat-and-mouse battle with a killer arsonist. Someone is lighting fires. First they target homes and businesses, but then a body is found at one of the crime scenes. More fires are lit. And at each one a single person dies. But the victims have led spotless lives, and apparently there's no connection between them.

Meanwhile, the town is facing a very peculiar threat from a group of sinister Satanists led by a charismatic businessman. Who is burning with anger, and can Nikki stop them before anyone else dies?

I'm a fan of this series, but...

...FIRE ON THE FENS is disappointing compared to the first eight novels in the series.

Gripping Story

I thoroughly enjoy this series, and this book is one of the best. The narrator is wonderful, and brings the characters to life. I can't wait for the next book.

First Ever Disappointment

Love the narrator, characters, setting. This was the first of the series that was flat and predictable. Even the "mystery wedding party reveal" was cheeseball city. If you're a fan, you'll likely still enjoy this, but if you only dabble, give it a pass and wait for her next installment.

Murder by Fire

Book nine in the series finds DI Nikki Galena and DS Joseph Easter on the hunt for an arsonist that is a killer. With a new acting Superintendent, Cam Walker, Nikki and Joseph's personal relationship seems to not be an issue at the police station, (as they had feared, until they learned that Cam would be replacing their new Super, who was recovering from an accident). Helping with the investigation is retired veteran fire investigator, John Carson, who is instrumental in assisting the team. I've come to love the characters in the series, Nikki, Joseph, Rory (the quirky forensic pathologist), Yvonne, Cat, Dave, and Nikki's mother, Eve and her friends. The killer turns out to be no one I would have suspected, and the path to finding the suspect was a chilling one. Great tale and excellent resolution. I hope there will be more in the series.

Another good installment

I always look forward to the next installment in the DI Nikki Galena series. Joy Ellis and Henrietta Meire are a winning combo.

Another winner for Joy Ellis.

The book is very well written but, I found the overall plot a bit hard to follow at times.

Joy Ellis is a must-read author

This is one of my favorite series. Although this isn't my favorite of the books it's still very good. I love the dialogue and the characters.

The narration is perfect!

WOW what a thriller

As ever superb plot, decoys, twists and then the final who and why.
my only complaint is the narrator who spoils the whole thing, all her accent sound the same and do appear to change inappropriately.

Great series, but needs Different narrator

The story continues with this month in the series and, is as good as the others. As with the others, the narrator's strange voices and accents are irritating and mispronounciation of common words like mischievous, foliage, aficionado and many more is rife. It was bad enough that every time she conquered a"big "word successfully, I have a little cheer, as One would a child you're teaching to read.
Otherwise, great story and I'm looking forward to the next.

Irritatingly poor pronunciation marred performance

Love this series but the incorrect pronunciation of the word 'curate' - as in Church of England priest not a keeper of museum artifacts - really marred my enjoyment of this book.

Problems with the voice actor .

Great story, well written characterisation good
I found it difficult to follow; the narrator, the voice actor did not a sufficient range to play the parts. Sometimes it was hard to link the voices to the characters. I found the voice tedious at times even screeching.
It was frustrating to try to unravel the intricacies of the plot through the range of voices. The skills of a great voice actor include the ability to play a range of voices with different genders, ages, accents. These skills were underdeveloped.
A good story, suitably distracting but I will avoid this narrator in the future.

Good story. Narration awful.

I found the narrator really spoiled the story. The accents didn’t work for me. A male voice would have been preferable.

narrator ruins what may or not be a good story

I would have returned this book if I hadn't recently returned one which I had forgotten I'd already bought.
The narration was flat and dull. Accents were from ??, men and women sounded the same, in fact it was impossible to differentiate between characters. The result is, I hardly followed what was going on in the story. I will not be buying anymore Joy Ellis with this narrator.

She's done it again!

i admit I also downloaded the Audible narration and listened over 50% but the addion of the accents only accentuates the Author's brilliant painting of the Fens. I don't believe there are really so many murders on the Fens but you will fall in love with her characters and be engrossed by the mystery.
