Publisher's Summary

Gwen's never wanted to be a leader, but when no one else stepped up, she took on the role. As the mayor of post-apocalyptic Shreveport, she's made decisions to protect her people...and most of them have backfired disastrously.

When she discovers the dangerous gold dragon lurking outside of the fort has decided she's his mate, heartsick Gwen thinks the best thing she can do is confront him and take him far away from the city.

She does this to save her people - her sister, her friends, her fort. She doesn't expect to understand the dragon. She certainly doesn't expect to fall in love.

Contains mature themes.

Worst in the series

I’ve been waiting for this to come out as every story in this series has been good and I’m utterly disappointed with the author. How could you drag out everything this far. You made Gwen’s character so frustrating with no real reason. Her character ultimate comes off very selfish not considering the male characters feelings at all because she looks down on his intelligence. She’s constantly starting something sexual and then rejects him when she decides she can’t go all the way when she knows he is wanting to mate. I don’t even get why you dragged this story on his way. This is supposed to be an erotic romance and with four hours left in a ten hour book theirs just one erotic scene and no sex at all. The two main characters are moving at a snails pace and I feel sorry for the dragon. This the worst book in this series, do better.

I hate Gwen.......

A good 80 percent of this book was repetition of Gwen saying the same thing over and over.

I hate the fact that she complains about being a leader and then when she's not the leader she turns around saying that her responsibility is to be a leader.

What really gets on my nerves does that she knows that Vaan needs to bond with her. She already put into her mind that she will bond with him and then she turns around and doesn't and wait till half the book to do it.

This book literally should have been just three hours long.

the heroine knows what to do to help her people. she knows what to do to help her dragon. yet she lets everyone suffer. she admits her deepests fears and and when asked what to do she says she does not know. ummmmmmmm, you have the knowledge, u have had your come to jesus moment and yet you do nothing. uhggggg, what an utter b*tch. hate the book. live the series.

pity party

for over half of this book it was like nothing but a pity party or she was in desperate need of psychiatry. I wish the ending of the book would have came halfway through because she became more interesting and strong that part I loved reading how they work together.

Love the series...

I love this series but I just found Gwen annoying, and whiny. All but two hours were her complaining or thinking she wasn’t good enough. Excellent narration as usual.

Not as good as the other stories

This book was actually boring to me. Not sure why this one was written this way. An indecisive Black woman in need of others to tell her what to do because of what? It didn’t make sense to me. Bias comes through when compared to the other books. Disappointed with this. The narrators were good as usual, just a lousy story.

A great series

Gwen and Vonn are a well paired couple. I have eagerly waited for their story. It sounds like the series is taking an interesting turn.

Frustrating

Not quite done with this book yet, but I can tell you it is very frustrating. The main character is very indecisive, she can't choose what she wants and it is the most frustrating thing. I am 3/4 of the way into the book and still nothing has happened.

oof

so common consensus is that gwen... I get where she is coming from but damn... grab your big girl shoes and get to it. she's got a perfectionist internal hatred of herself but whines about it. I really appreciate Mara for putting her in a position to confront that. overall Gwen's a bit repetitive in her dialog. the voice acting was choice as always with Ruby Dixon novels so good on that. what really saves this installment is that it progresses the storyline immensely. so although 1 character made it rough to get through, it is a pivotal part of the series.

Fire in his spirit

Another one that could of lost 25 chapters in the middle and you wouldn't of noticed hours of her" oh I'm not good and make bad decisions" him " oh I'm so lost and she won't mate me" and just repeating themselves over and over and over. Honestly by chapter 28 I was ready to stop the book. My advice you can read the first four chapter then jump to chapter 30. Your not going to miss anything. It gets good and actually gets a story line around chapter 35. Not sure if I will continue with this series. Disappointing.

surprised by bad reviews

another beloved slice in this amazing collection of stories. gwen is not annoying at all. she is a woman overwhelmed, doubting her self worth just like many of us do. so relatable.
