Publisher's summary

The author of five blockbuster novels, Emily Giffin delivers an unforgettable story of two women, the families that make them who they are, and the longing, loyalty, and love that binds them together.

Marian Caldwell is a 36-year-old television producer, living her dream in New York City. With a fulfilling career and satisfying relationship, she has convinced everyone, including herself, that her life is just as she wants it to be. But one night, Marian answers a knock on the door ... only to find Kirby Rose, an 18-year-old girl with a key to a past that Marian thought she had sealed off forever. From the moment Kirby appears on her doorstep, Marian’s perfectly constructed world - and her very identity - will be shaken to its core, resurrecting ghosts and memories of a passionate young love affair that threaten everything that has come to define her.

For the precocious and determined Kirby, the encounter will spur a process of discovery that ushers her across the threshold of adulthood, forcing her to re-evaluate her family and future in a wise and bittersweet light. As the two women embark on a journey to find the one thing missing in their lives, each will come to recognize that where we belong is often where we least expect to find ourselves - a place that we may have willed ourselves to forget, but that the heart remembers forever.

Growing up & Getting Real

nice story of growing up, hard lessons, memories & moving on. But a reminder that the past is there, and you will always have to come to terms with it. Be strong, smart open & let people in.

Heartwarming

What a heartwarming story told about adoption, family, relationships and feelings. I enjoyed the different points of view. Orlagh Cassidy did a great job narrating this book. Once I got started I didn't want to stop. Emily never disappoints but I think this is my new favorite book by Emily.

Pretty good, but missing something...

Any additional comments?

This is a heartwarming story from Giffin and if you like her past books, then you're likely to enjoy this, as well. It's well read by Orlagh Cassidy and the story has a good flow, but I did feel like it was missing something.....some meat, if you will. It was all a little too good to be true and just when you thought she would really delve into a character or relationship, she moved on to the next thing. For example...and this isn't really a spoiler, but just in case: SPOILER ALERT: nobody feels any conflict about the situation, everyone forgives the main character, everyone has great relationships with their parents, all of whom great, happy, understanding people and best pals with their kids. Kirby who is supposed to be an angsty teen that doesn't really fit in, finds peace all the parents, her sister and a boyfriend. Ain't life grand for everyone!?
it just seemed a little too happy and tidy to be a believable story.

But, Giffin is an enjoyable author. The overall story was a good listen. I was just hoping for a little more.

An utterly engaging story of adoption!

Emily Giffin is probably one of my top ten favorite authors of all time, and this story does not disappoint. The characters are all endearing and engaging, and you care very much what happens to them. I love stories that portray adoptions in the truly inspiring way that they really can be.

"Great Book, Great Performance"

Another book in the normal "genre" I like to listen to, and exactly what I was after. A light-hearted story that kept my attention throughout. I was happy I picked it.

Not your usual ending

Emily Giffin has a way of making her stories mirror life and if your looking for a happy ending she doesn't deliver. But in it isn't sad, just thought provoking. Highly recommend seeing the world through this author's eyes.

Emotional Roller-coaster Ride

Would you consider the audio edition of Where We Belong to be better than the print version?

Orlagh Cassidy demonstrated a great performance for the audio version of Where We Belong. In it, she was able to bring EG's characters to life, expressing the complicated lessons we learn as we grow up. I felt a lot of compassion for these characters, understanding the various emotions that each experienced within this "coming of age" story. The agonizing decisions that this young teenage girl encounters when faced with a very grown up situation, and then the consequences everyone in her life is subjected to because of the choices she made. The strength and devotion of family ties, as each member comes to terms with the complicated relationships between its members is compelling.I couldn't put this book down, and was saddened when I came to the conclusion. I would have ended the book differently than Emily...but then again, she is the best selling author!
