Editorial reviews

This fantastical collection of short stories from W. P. Kinsella contains tales of wolves, conspiracy theorists, and legends raised from the dead - but most of all, stories about baseball, that greatest of all American sports.

Actor Kris Koscheski’s cocky performance of The Dixon Cornbelt League perfectly captures the peculiar nostalgia of Kinsella’s stories - nostalgia for a time which never actually existed, when the magic of a good old-fashioned baseball game was really, well, magical. Koscheski deftly inhabits each character we encounter, drawling and spitting, cursing and cajoling, throwing himself fully into a performance which makes this audiobook a genuine joy to hear.

Publisher's summary

Shortstops who run with the wolves, painted eggs that reveal deeply disturbing meanings, long-dead Hall of Famers who miraculously return to the game, an Iowa minor-league town with a secret conspiracy: these are the elements from which W.P. Kinsella weaves nine fabulous stories about the magical world of baseball.

From the dugouts, clubhouses, bedrooms, and barrooms to the interior worlds of hope and despair, these eerie stories present the absurdities of human relationships and reveal the writer's special genius for touching the heart.

Memorable, heartfelt magic realism

Magic realist baseball stories by the author of “Shoeless Joe.” The fantastical elements in many of the stories are richly enjoyable and clever, but it’s the humanity of the way they are realized that makes these stories such gems.

Satisfied a Baseball Craving During the 2022 Lockout

Some stories were better than others and some are just…odd. Several start quite promising and then fizzle out a little bit. Due to the 2022 MLB lockout, I decided to enjoy some baseball books to get my fix and this hit that, but there’s definitely better out there.

Kinsella Shows You More Than Field of Dreams

The mixture of stories is eclectic. A Latin infielder that turns into a wolf, a manager who is sacked before he can take Hall of Famer Christy Matthewson's advice to turn an organizational arm into the next Dennis Eckersley, a check-in with Roberto Clemente whose life raft continues to search for 1973 and a return to the diamond and a midwestern summer league for college players who cannot quite seize any key moments on the diamond when it counts. These are several of the stories that play out like a marathon of the "Twilight Zone." The wishful story about Roberto Clemente searching endlessly for a return to the twilight of his career was especially poignant.

If you liked or loved the book that inspired the movie "Field of Dreams" I am sure you will find a story you like. Kinsella is a baseball fan's fan. Enjoy the brief listen.
