A Grown-Up Story about Middle School
Author Hirsh Sawhney has written a very grownup novel about life in middle school. His “Siddharthe" doesn't so much come of age as transform in fits and starts.
It’s set in the early 90s in New England-- through this family we can see the South Asian immigrant experience of both the 1st and 2nd generation. Siddharthe agonizes about what father might do, how he might embarrass him while trying to find a niche in a new school. His father, an Indian expat, feels culturally isolated and becomes invested in extreme BJP politics.
Politics look clearer to him from afar when he is actually seeing less. How true that is.
Many, touching, telling moments in this story that ring true, and narrator Vikas Adam made me feel all of them.
