Publisher's summary

Discovering George Michael's Faith confirmed for David Crabb what every bully already knew: He was gay. What saved him from high school was finding a group of outlandish friends who reveled in being outsiders. David found himself enmeshed with misfits: wearing black, cutting class, staying out all night, drinking, tripping, chain-smoking, idolizing the Pet Shop Boys - and learning lessons about life and love along the way.

Richly detailed with '90s pop culture, Bad Kid is as laugh-out-loud funny as it is poignant. David Crabb's journey through adolescence captures the essence of every person's struggle to understand his or her true self.

I wish I could give this audiobook 1,000 stars

I’ve been listening to David Crabb tell stories on Risk! [podcast] for years, and I finally discovered this masterpiece.
This might be my new favorite book, with everything from teenage angst, to drag queens, to heartbreak. A truly amazing coming-of-age story, and Crabb’s narration takes the whole thing to an incredible new level. A must listen.

Amazingly relatable book for all misfits!

David Crabb’s story of adolescence and young adulthood growing up in Texas is one of the most entertaining audiobooks I’ve ever listened to! Not only does he take us on a deep dive through the goth scene of the late 80s and early 90s, but he does so in a way that makes you love your own inner punk! It’s easy to forget that all the characters in this book are voiced solely by the author, as he embodies each friend and family member, masterfully painting vivid pictures for the listener. I especially love his renditions of the songs that defined that time in his life. Bravo!!

Listened to the entire book in one sitting

I can’t remember the last time an author so directly captured my own lived experience through their words. I am stunned by this memoir. I want everyone I care about to read it.

Unflinching in its honesty. Aching in its evocation of first love. And searing in its examination of loss. These characters became fully realized to the extent that I was in no way prepared to say good-bye to them at the book’s conclusion.

Perhaps that is David’s greatest achievement with this work: his sorrow at the ending of these relationships somehow becomes our own.

Best performance by an author narrator ever

Characters' voices and personas rendered so richly. This is a book based on the author's solo show, and has been performed here with the experience and practice of a well crafted work of art.
