Publisher's summary

Story
Obituary writer Nadine Barbault doesn’t mind being called “Lady Death”. It suits the ice queen persona she’s cultivated to survive the fast-paced Toronto Herald. So when Nadine learns that famous (and reclusive) author Dot Voline has died, she doesn’t hesitate to run the obituary…only to discover that Dot is very much alive. Nadine’s screw-up has brought Wesley Chen of the rival Spear no end of joy—she’s been a thorn in his extremely ambitious side for years. But the renewed interest in Dot also surfaced chatter about a mysterious past scandal.

Story
Eight years ago I fell into a secret summer fling with my best friend’s little sister before our lives went in different directions. Now, I’m the grumpy to Juliet’s sunshine on a popular dating podcast we host, and when a wealthy fan gives us a charming coastal cottage as the biggest thank you ever, we head to the town where I grew up to give it a makeover. And find the house has only one bed. Located under a mirrored ceiling.

Story
Gabriel Ferrara is tall and handsome, and most days she wants to stab her eyes out with a pencil, anything to stop her seeing his perfection. How any female could work in these conditions and not be completely besotted with him is beyond her. Then he opens his mouth and she remembers why. He's bossy and sarcastic, with a wit so sharp it could cut glass. Every weekend is the same . . . while he's off living his dream life, she's counting down the days until Monday when she sees him again.

Good story but the narrator is not that good.
I really dislike the exaggerated indigenous accent the narrator, Lucia Mendez uses as La Malinche.

Poor performance by narrator
Unfortunately, Lucia Mendez seems to miss the syntax in many occasions breaking sentences at the wrong place. The story is fiction, although based on real events and characters. It is a controversial issue (Malinche’s role during the conquest) but Laura Esquivel writes an entertaining plot.

Malinche as a Legend
If you could sum up Malinche in three words, what would they be?
Legendary, dramatic, and compelling
Who was your favorite character and why?
The Grandmother and her influence on the young Malinche
What about Lucia Mendez’s performance did you like?
Lucia Mendez speaks quite distinctly so it is easy to understand her against the background music.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The opening descriptions with Malinche and the grandmother
Any additional comments?
I hesitated to purchase the audio version because of other reviewers' criticisms about the background music, but I found the music to be an interesting feature of the audio version. Esquivel appears to like to try new technologies and forms for the presentation of her novels. The drama in this one ties the music into the legendary nature of the story of Malinalli.

Libro maravilloso, pésima producción de FONOLIBRO
FONOLIBRO, se equivocaron, NO ERA RADIONOVELA. Musicalizacion constante bloquea al usuario. Representación estereotipada. For English readers: give this book a chance, narrated by Maria Conchita Alonso, UNABRIDGE production.
