Publisher's Summary

A chance meeting in Rio takes Maria to Geneva, where she dreams of finding fame and fortune, yet ends up working the streets as a prostitute. In Geneva, Maria drifts further and further away from love while at the same time developing a fascination with sex.

Eventually, Maria's despairing view of love is put to the test when she meets a handsome young painter. In this odyssey of self-discovery, Maria has to choose between pursuing a path of darkness, 'sexual pleasure for its own sake', or risking everything to find her own 'inner light' and the possibility of sacred sex, sex in the context of love.

A daring modern fable about the nature of love and sex.

Beautiful Story & A Good Example Of Determination

What made the experience of listening to Eleven Minutes the most enjoyable?

This is my second book by Paulo Coelho and it can only be discribe with one word PERFECT. Great story line, good examples of using the natural laws of the universe, just PERFECT.

Good start - became boring.

I enjoyed the first chapters of this book and rather liked the narrators. I found the concept interesting but it was as if Paulo Coelho ran out of inspiration and decided to write about sexual fantasy. I found some of it fairly nauseating and otherwise was simply bored. I really wanted the book to end. I would not really recommend this book.

I loved the way book makes a listener to deeply feel the feeling of actors

Speakers are so much in the flow of the book, with a great way of passing soul of the play

Brilliant narrator and capturing plot

Fruitful lessons to be learned from the book about goals, perseverance and stretching oneself beyond your own perceived limits. If one looks past the explicit sex scenes, the moral of the story is truly profound.

Terrific Read

I always gain so much from reading Coelho's books. This one in particular exposes a sensitive topic in the perfect way.

Good read

Would you listen to Eleven Minutes again? Why?

I would listen again to this book because some of the passages make you think a lot

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I found the ending a bit disappointing, I wish something else would have happened

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

11 minutes of love

11 minutes mean more then ever

I liked how Maria perfectly described her thoughts about love, sex and relationships. Coelho captured perfectly her world and entices his readers until the very end.

Good book. Bad choice on the reader.

I like Paulo Coelho a lot, but didn't like the reader of this book. Very think and pompous accent. He gave a sense of distance from the character. Perhaps if it would have been a woman... The story is very interesting from the main characters point of view about sex, sexuality and prostitution.

Interesting but unrealistic love story

I can see why the story is compared to a fairy tale. I prefer Veronica decides to die. The dark side the human experience isn't explored in this story leaving it a little unsatisfying. As always Coelho asks some thought provoking questions. This is a good read but not, in my opinion, his best work.

Inspiring and memorable

Time slips past when listening to Eleven Minutes has an eventful and unexpected life journey of Maria unfolds. Maria's character is brought to life through the intense delivery given by Emilia Fox which stays with you after the story has ended. Eleven Minutes, my second Coehlo read, has encouraged me to go on to read many more.

Amazingl look in to a not-so-alternative lifestyle

I selected this book based on a recommendation. I had serious reservations about it before starting .... but quickly I was drawn in. The writing style, the guidance of explaining how a 'regaulr' girl can get involved in something so extrememe via rational/a small steps is amazing. Fantastic descriptions of the life of an '11 minute girl' with many insights/high and lows...

I wished it could have gone on longer... shame that there's not an unabridge version. I shall certainly be seeking out the "full" version in paperback...

Highly recommended.
