Publisher's Summary

Evil comes in many forms. Gabriel Willis missed the warning signs of its imminent arrival. As a result, blood, pain, and misery are now his unwanted companions. A loving father, devoted husband, and former soldier, he no longer leads a normal life. After being arrested, falsely accused of terrorism and tortured, he discovers his family has been kidnapped. The madman responsible has handed him the complicated task of traveling halfway around the world to the mountains of Afghanistan. There he must find Othia and return with her, or his family will die.

A brilliant archaeologist, Othia has unearthed a secret truth hidden deep beneath the sands of an ancient Afghan village. A truth that will alter the lives of hundreds of thousands - including Gabriel and Othia.

Left with an impossible decision, Gabriel must choose: fulfill his destiny or risk the destruction of humanity. With the weight of the world upon him, Gabriel struggles to answer the impossible question: when should a father and husband place the needs of the many above the needs of his precious few.

Great start to a series

Any additional comments?

Great start to a series.

I was really looking forward to this book and I was not disappointed at all. The story pulls you in immediately and never lets go. Even though it's a shorter book it doesn't feel like it. It's well written, creative, flows smoothly and is very entertaining. The plot continually moves forward at a good pace. There is no middle of the book slump, something new is always happening. It keeps you glued to the story and on the edge of your seat.

Would I recommend this book? Absolutely. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

Suspense, mystery, intrigue, action, horror, religion, unnatural forces and catch 22 situation all woven into a very entertaining and interesting story with a great cast of characters.

Meral Mathews did a fantastic job with the narration. This is the first time I have heard him narrate a book. Nice voice. Clearly spoken with an even pace. All his character voices were really good even the female voices. You could easily tell which characters were speaking through the accent or voice. He brought the story to life. I would definitely listen to other books he narrates. Very enjoyable.

I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator or publisher.
Thrilling Unique New Series! Well Worth Hearing!!!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would definitely recommend this book to my friends and family. It was really a great thrill ride all the way thru. I enjoyed all the aspects of the story and found it really engaging and some of the elements of faith thought provoking.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

The plot did keep me on the edge of my seat. You never know what was going to happen next and really who was on the right side of things and what peoples motivations were until deep into the story. It was really good.

Have you listened to any of Meral Mathews’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is the very first time I have heard Mr. Mathews perform but I will look for more of his work based on what I have heard in this audiobook. I believe that he gave an amazing perform that gave life and depth to these characters that made the listener get deeply invested in the story.

If you could rename Defiance, what would you call it?

Gabriel's Tribulation

Very intense

I was on the edge of my seat and didn't want to pause. This book was an exciting listen both because of the author's skill and creativity and the narrator's performance/delivery. I could follow the story line of this intricate plot and I appreciate the descriptions of the characters feelings, surroundings, and other "characters". I also enjoy well-written archaeology-related adventures, though I usually have a low tolerance for those that have "heavy-handed" religion themes. This book is balanced with religion and adventure which held my interest. I am hopeful there will be more from this author and narrator combo.

I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author -- which has not influenced my review.

Horror at its best!!!

Full of suspense, action, and horror! You will not be able to put it down once you start. Sets the stage for really frightening horror that follows in the subsequent books. A great story, brilliant characters and demons that will keep you up at night!

Defiance

Defiance is a dark descent into the mind of an author who uses vivid detail to bring readers into a chaotic landscape. The story brings to life an epic battle of good against evil. The protagonist is not a cliche superhero, but a relatable mortal who is flawed and often torn between looking out for his family and the salvation of mankind.

This book is not for the faint of heart. Recommend for fans of science-fiction/fantasy/horror looking for more realism and fans of political/military thrillers interested in going beyond the mortal realm.

Rated five stars for thorough descriptions that bring scenes to life in the reader's mind. Additionally, the author has the real-life experience to create accurate depictions of interrogation resistance, kinetic operations, and deception campaigns.

Great Story Involving Battle Angels

I thoroughly enjoyed this part of the story, I thought the character development was really good. It took me a little while to understand where the story was going, because it starts with two different story lines that come together after a while. The merging of the story lines didn't feel forced and I liked the way the characters interacted together.

I like biblical fiction and I did not know this book was in that genre. I was pleasently surprised when a legion on warrior angels come to help two humans save the planet from demons. The author quotes scripture and seems to have done his research when it comes to the different books of the Bible.

In the first line I wrote I said "part" of the book because the author randomly cut the book somewhere in the first third or so, I assume so he could make more money selling the second and third parts of the "trilogy". The problem is that it didn't end where it should have, it was right in the middle of the story. I don't have a problem with authors writing actual trilogy's to increase their profits, but when a book is only five hours long and the second part is also five hours, I am not apt to purchase the second part, but that is just me. I really liked the story and I may still purchase the second one.

This book was gifted to me by the author in exchange for an honest review.

Can Gabriel Win His Last Battle?

Gabriel is framed, taken from his home, accused of being a terrorist, and tortured. His wife and children are kidnapped and taken to a remote hideaway. Gabriel, true to his training and personality, refuses to break under the non-stop torture he endures. He plays a subterfuge game with his captors to make them believe he has broken when he is really just stalling for time. Meanwhile, halfway around the world, an archeologist makes a mind shattering discovery in a remote part of Afghanistan. In order to save his family, Gabriel must agree to bring the archeologist back to the United States. All of this is orchestrated by a shadowy organization working behind the scenes at the highest levels.

I always enjoy a good save the world, dark religious conspiracy story and this one was no exception. It is a little more murky and harder to pinpoint who the good guys versus who are the evil ones but it was interesting enough that I will check out the next book in the series. Hopefully it will reveal a few more answers.

I really enjoyed Meral Mathews narration of this book. He strikes just the chord with all things, including male and female voices, thoughts, and overall narration. I listened on 1.5 speed.

I received this audiobook for free through Audiobook Boom! in exchange for an honest review.

"I mean, come on, Gabriel: angels. ANGELS!"

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

This is not the first of a series but the opening part of a serial, basically setting the scene for further books to come.

Any additional comments?

The opening scenes to Defiance are exciting, rather mysterious. A well respected, retired army officer who fought in Afghanistan, is wrongly seized from his home and held on charges of terrorism. Shortly after, his wife and two children are kidnapped, again by an armed force, but this time it is by the group which had set up the husband. They are taken 'into protection' in an exotically furnished mansion somewhere unknown. Later, this same group rescues the ex-soldier and use the custody of his family to blackmail him into working for them. They are brutal and mean business, killing his best friend in front of him.
So Gabriel, the soldier, accepts the commission - to bring back the archaeologist who has been working on a recently discovered temple or, if this is impossible, her notebooks.

The story so far is certainly exciting with heavy supernatural elements..But, as previously mentioned, is only the first part of a serial and, therefore, incomplete. For this reason I cannot rate is more highly than three stars.

The narration by Meral Matthews is good, aiding the tension and somewhat soothing the confusion inherent in the early text. His voicing of the various protagonists is also clear and each is individual. It is his reading which, for this reader, brought the greatest realism to the story so far.

I received Defiance as a freely given gift from the rights holder, via Audiobook Boom. My thanks for that. However, without having heard the rest of this on going story, I am reluctant to recommend it without fully stressing the unfinished nature of this opening section of a serial.
