Publisher's Summary

The galaxy burns at Horus' command, and a billion more lives are lost with each passing moment - though it was not always so. Once, the title of Warmaster stood for honour, loyalty and a fierce pride in the strength of the Space Marine Legions. But perhaps by following the myriad lines of destiny and defiance that were already woven around the primarchs and their sons, we may yet come to understand the bitterness that can eat away at even the most steadfast of souls....

worth listening to

It's pretty good, some are way better than others. Normal grab bag with the stories. felt like some spoiled a future novel, but it was still good.

Lots of good lil stories

Apart from a few glaring *mis-reads*, the narrators all did a good job. Nice variety of stories & characters & settings. One of the better compilations. I just hate that a lot of the stories I read as stand alone novellas are reprinted in these later Horus Heresy compilations. Means about 1/3rd of the tales were old news. Not that I don't appreciate the performance of them in an audiobook, but in paperback it's a bit of a waste.

silly book of short stories

really wish they would label these as books of short stories instead of a title like War without in so that way I do not waste a credit on a book of excerpts from other Horus heresy books.

More short stories most confusing

Although I love the entire Heresy series. This was my least favorite. Most of short stories dont have enough explanation to know whats going on unless you have happen to read all of the back stories. Even though I have many are still extremely vague and actually some are down right boring. The cover and the title of the book is misleading in that it leads you to believe that this is actually going to be about the emperor and Horus but only one story has anything to do with that. I also am just not a fan of John Banks voice portrayals of many of the characters. I suggest you save this one for paper back and buy a used copy at that.

Decent short stories

Some of the pronunciations were inexcusable. Aside from that decent short stories. Seemed to focus a lot on the traitor legions.

Many great stories

Another good book that allows one to see different aspects of what is taking place in many different story lines. Great book.

Grimderp

The HH anthologies are generally hit and miss, but this one was straight up chaos porn. Spoiler Alert! The incomptent and perpetually outmaneuvered loyalists snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in, literally, every single story. I'm no imperialist wonk, but without parity, there is no meaningful conflict, and without any meaningful conflict, you get boring stories, such as the ones contained in this book. Also, if someone could at least attempt to write an ending that doesn't seem like it was copied verbatim from a rejected M. Night Shayamalan script (I use the term "script" loosely), that would be super. Don't get me wrong, most of the books in this series are way better than they have right to be, but this one may as well have been written in crayon.

Another stellar listen

Great compilation of short stories providing even more rich detail to a world well constructed. As usual the narration is outstanding. They have selected great voice actors that bring the characters to life. Thank you for another excellent audible experience

One of the better anthologies

For once actually some relevant short stories. Many are like always skippable but a few stand out. Narration is ok - but No Keeble

da ja vu

was a ok book but felt I had heard some of the stories before. then I releized most of them have been retold in audio dramas, i would recommend listen to the audio dramas first as they are a lot more gripping and more fun to listen to.

Fantastic Stories

A must listen on your way through the HH series. Some important stories not to be missed with some fantastic narration.
