Publisher's Summary

The number one New York Times best-selling series that started with Stalking Jack the Ripper and Hunting Prince Dracula continues in this third bloody installment! A luxurious ocean liner becomes a floating prison of madness and horror when passengers are murdered one by one...with nowhere to run from the killer.

Audrey Rose Wadsworth and her partner-in-crime-investigation, Thomas Cresswell, are en route to New York to help solve another blood-soaked mystery. Embarking on a week-long voyage across the Atlantic on the opulent RMS Etruria, they're delighted to discover a traveling troupe of circus performers, fortune tellers, and a certain charismatic young escape artist entertaining the first-class passengers nightly.

But then, privileged young women begin to go missing without explanation, and a series of brutal slayings shocks the entire ship. The disturbing influence of the Moonlight Carnival pervades the decks as the murders grow ever more freakish, with nowhere to escape except the unforgiving sea.

It's up to Audrey Rose and Thomas to piece together the gruesome investigation as even more passengers die before reaching their destination. But with clues to the next victim pointing to someone she loves, can Audrey Rose unravel the mystery before the killer's horrifying finale?

"Displaying her usual fierce determination and progressive ideals, Audrey Rose is once again a compelling protagonist. Another delightfully mysterious addition to the series." (School Library Journal)

"Maniscalco's winning combinations of historical fiction, romance, forensics, and a feisty heroine will attract historical-fiction and romance readers.... Well-placed hooks advance the plot and sustain the swift pace." (Booklist)

Immensely disappointed

I have been stuck like glue since the beginning of the first chapter of book one, Until now that is the characters have become stale in my opinion. I am hoping that in book four she can spices things up a bit brunt Thomas and Audrey have become stale. Was not impressed with the ending either. I believe Carrie is it amazing author and have thoroughly enjoyed her work thus far, don’t get me wrong there were good points in the story and some plot twist but nothing like The first two books this one was highly predictable.

A Disappointing Third Installment

I cant believe this is the same author and characters. The plot was boring, except for the murders. All, and I mean all the characters got on my nerves! I was just waiting for the end. Which the ending was FANTASTIC! But it wasn’t enough to pull the rest of the book. I’m still very excited and hopeful for the next book.

Ok

Though not as good as previous books it is ok. The story is spoiled if you know anything about Harry Houdini life.

Super fun historical thriller

Outstanding audio performance. Addictive trilogy and such a fun look into the historical world on the late 1800's at a time when our current day is horrific and tragic. wonderful character development.

review

I loved the story. I was expecting a bit more romance moments between Audrey Rose and Thomas, but other than that I can't wait to see what Audrey Rose and Thomas do next. <3

A Disappointing Installment

Escaping from Houdini was unmemorable, disappointing and completely unnecessary. And that ending literally made me want to throw the entire laptop out of the window. A friend told me that the ARC was actually missing that final chapter, and I wished they had kept it out of the finished copy because it was unnecessary, dumb and a ridiculous plot twist. If they were hoping to "save" the book with that chapter, I can guarantee you that all it did was make me want to cry.

My holy queen

This book had me thinking about it when I wasn't even listening to it.
SPOLIERS.........
Audrey rose almost killed my heart, I swear if she was a real women I would have shaken her and slapped her to wake her up.
Thomas Creswell is a amazing man that gives her freedom but I need them to get married already my heart can't take these two any more.
PLEASE LISTEN TO THIS SERIES AND FALL IN LOVE WITH THEM AS I DID.

Disappointing Entry

Unfortunately, this book was a huge disappointment for me. I’m going to try my best to keep this review spoiler free, but I need to rant a little.
The mystery plot of this book was fine, I didn’t find it predictable and it was enjoyable enough. More importantly I didn’t really guess who the culprit was. The unfortunate part was, this mystery was completely overshadowed by the absolutely stupid love triangle. The only thing that this love triangle was based on was a miscommunication plotline and a series of increasingly bad decisions by Audrey. These bad decisions are usually followed up or proceeded by an internal monologue to try and provide some reasoning, unfortunately I just couldn’t understand this reasoning in most instances. I spent most of my time reading feeling frustrated and I just wanted to reach into the book and shake some sense into these characters.
Overall, I think I’m going to continue the series, just because the book ended alright. But I’m also going to try forgetting that this book was ever part of the series.
(There are several more spoiler-filled reviews on Goodreads (look for Katerina and Sharon) that more clearly outline the problems with this relationship and book in general, I would highly recommend checking them out if you want to know more).

An excellent audiobook experience

The third in Kerri Maniscalco’s Victorian macabre mystery series, ‘Escaping from Houdini’ is set on the Etruria, a cruise ship travelling from London to New York in 1899. Audrey Rose Wadsworth and Thomas Cresswell, and Uncle Jonathan Wadsworth, A series of gruesome murders present this Victorian forensic science team with a series of challenges and mysteries that must be solved before arriving at their destination.

The story is intricate and complex, dark and dangerous, and completely captivating. Themes of distraction, illusion and deception interweave like a macabre carnival dance. The personal consequences and implications for Audrey Rose, Thomas, and other passengers on the ship are compelling, keeping the audience engaged both mentally and emotionally in the drama as it unfolds.

Nicola Barber’s narration is expressive, fluent and most enjoyable. Barber has a definite gift for characterisation and drama that makes her storytelling lively and most enjoyable.
