Publisher's Summary

From the breakthrough international best-selling author of The Girl in the Ice, a breathtaking novel about a disgraced female detective’s fight for redemption. And survival....

Kate Marshall was a promising young police detective when she caught the notorious Nine Elms serial killer. But her greatest victory suddenly turned into a nightmare. Traumatized, betrayed, and publicly vilified for the shocking circumstances surrounding the cannibal murder case, Kate could only watch as her career ended in scandal.

Fifteen years after those catastrophic events, Kate is still haunted by the unquiet ghosts of her troubled past. Now a lecturer at a small coastal English university, she finally has a chance to face them. A copycat killer has taken up the Nine Elms mantle, continuing the ghastly work of his idol.

Enlisting her brilliant research assistant, Tristan Harper, Kate draws on her prodigious and long-neglected skills as an investigator to catch a new monster. Success promises redemption, but there’s much more on the line: Kate was the original killer’s intended fifth victim...and his successor means to finish the job.

Incredible intensity and suspense!!

5 stars seriously underrates this marvelous suspense thriller novel! I've listened to more than 300 audio books this year and more than 3000 since joining Audible 13 years ago. NINE ELMS is one of the very best. I've been a fan of British author Robert Bryndza since Audible brought his outstanding Detective Erika Foster to audio in 2016. NINE ELMS is Book 1 in his university lecturer and private detective Kate Marshall series. Please read the publisher's summary before buying this novel because the Hannibal Lechter-like subject matter may turn some people off. Then get ready for a whale of a ride.

Audible did well to select well known British actress Kristin Atherton to narrate Nine Elms. She has little experience narrating audio books, but she does a superb job.

I very, very highly recommend NINE ELMS.

A bit graphic for my taste

I love a good mystery with relatable characters. I did like the characters in this book though not as much as I the authors other books. The ending was a bit abrupt. Otherwise my only comment is that some of the scenes are very graphic and disturbing.

Great new heroine from Robert Bryndza

I've been a fan of this author since his very first book. He's actually a favorite thriller writer of mine and I've followed his career and have read all of his books at this point. Now, this story didn't quite hit the same level as his previous series but it was still a great book. It wasn't quite as thrilling and fast-paced as the other books he has writen. However, I enjoyed the villain and the way it all started to come together, piece by piece until it was laid out and just falling other

I was really pleased with the narration from Krisin Mathertin. Her voice is enjoyable to listen too. Even playing male voices were exceptional. I can't wait to hear what she gives us next.

Another winner for Bryndza

Great start to a new series. It’s a shame that Kate lost her police job. She’s staying involved as a uni professor on criminology. The Nine Elms case was personal for her and she can’t forget about it.

With her teaching assistant with her, she investigates assumed copy-cat murders. The story was good and the characters are interesting, so that I look forward to reading the next book.

The narration was top rate!

Not Dark Enough

NO SPOILERS! Maybe I have a different definition of “dark” suspense, but for me this book barely qualifies. This book held my attention, but I was very annoyed by the main character. For someone who was a police officer, you wouldn’t know it. She was too flaky for me. Why can’t women be portrayed stronger? I would have liked the author to take more risks with his characters too, otherwise it makes it too predictable.

Also, there were parts to ending that did not add up. I wanted more satisfaction in the end but it never happened.

This is just an okay mystery thriller.

Excellent Drama and Suspense!

High praise for what looks like a really promising new series from Robert Bryndza. Former infamous detective Kate Marshall is a college professor in a quiet oceanside town until she and her assistant are drawn into the tangled web of a copycat killer- a copycat of the Nine Elms Cannibal Killer who Kate caught fifteen years ago before leaving the police force
This novel is full of suspense, the characters are likeable, and it's really well-written. This is one of the best audiobooks I've listened to, and I was hooked from start to finish. It also has a unique premise, different from other 'police procedurals,' kind of a mix between procedural and psychological suspense. I was sorry to see it end. Highly recommended.

Hungry for more of Kate

This is one of those rare stories where all aspects of police work reveal best efforts and intentions. Kate Marshall and her assistant professor at University are uniquely equipped to be steps ahead of authorities in their hunt for a killer. Its an ingenious plot that leads us through aa devious maze of gruesome murders.

It’s as well read as it is written. I hope there’s more from these characters.

I've found my next favorite author

Good story. Good narration. characters were realistic. The story kept me looking forward to when I could listen to some more. Not many books do that for me.
